Hi all , punto been mis firing fot a few days , so pulled each lead from the coil this morn found out that one of the terminals has a weak/ slow spark , so i changed the coil for a known working one and still same problem....

Any one any ideas ? No management light , and only one terminal on one coil , so shouldn't be ecu related ?

Since the 8v uses a wasted spark system

So since coils 1 does 2+3 and coil2 does 1+4 swap the coils over so they do the other cylinders

If the fault moves its a coil pack issue

If the fault stays its possibly a ht / spark issue since 1 of the sides is okay id say ecu islooking to be fine

Cyl 1 plug / lead made little diff when unplugged , the plug was a bit darker than the others ,

The car started to overheat yesterday , lost coolant , topped up , checked again lost coolant. Doesnt seem to be burning it (no smoke) and seems to be ok , after sticking some k seal in , but has not stopped the misfire.....

:bang::bang::bang::bang::bang:

K-seal is like using Fat in your arteries to clog a internal blood leak

It seems to be okay at first till it leaks again

Compression test time
overheating + Misfire + Loosing water = very suspicious HG failure i think

But if there is no water been lost on the floor - its gotta be burning it

Whats the firing order on the coils , getting conflicting replies through the searches

Had the car for 4 1/2 years , first signs of engine trouble :(

The order is stamped on the inside of the coil pack
Most are 2341
but the punto is a wasted spark system, so it can be 3214 as well - wont make a penny difference
So Coil A - does 2 + 3 and coil B does 1 + 4

the ignition of power stroke is 1 - 3 - 4 - 2 (aka the firing order)

Wow! Sorry to dig up an OLD thread, but this one is EXACTLY the issue I'm having

I haven't been on here for years, but my son started to drive in the last couple of years and is driving a Punto 1.2 8v

Recently he contacted me to say his car was not running right at all while on a journey. Went through a few things over the phone, and thought it might have been coil related, then checked oil and that was low, so topped up the oil also, but abandoned the journey and almost struggled home, except the car stopped when he was close to home and he was afraid to try start again in case he did any damage.

Car was towed back, and has been parked up for a few weeks.

The other day, I charged the battery and tried to start it and it was really badly misfiring and would not even stay running. I disconnected all the HT leads from the coil packs, and pushed them back on, started the car again and although still a bad misfire, it wasn't as bad, and stayed running this time.

I proceeded to remove the HT leads one by one from the 2 coil packs, and found that the front port on the rear pack (closest to the bulkhead) was not giving much of a spark when turning the ignition. All other ports seemed to fire ok. Also, the check engine light was lit on the dashboard.

So as one of the ports on the pack was sparking, I assumed this was not an ECU issue, and the pack was damaged. We took an old coil pack from an old Punto he had with same engine, but the car is still misfiring and when I did the HT lead test again, it was the very same port which is still not sparking! Only thing is, the engine light is now no longer showing on the dash.

I have attched a picture of the frame, showing the firing order, and it seems to be the port going to cylinder Number 1 which is the one with problems. Is it possible that this coil pack is also gone on the same port which would seem hugely coincidental, or am I totally missing something here?

Cylinder 1 is the one on the far left of the engine when viewed from the front of the car. Does that enable you to say with certainty which cylinder is misfiring?

The coil packs are interchangeable so you can confirm the behaviour of your working coil pack when its position is changed.

The spark inside the working engine depends upon plug lead mixture and compression to be exactly comparable to the other plugs sparking.

Sorry. Just saw this reply now
I think you misunderstood my post

I changed the rear coil pack, as the port labeled "1" on the rear pack was not providing a proper spark, but after changing for another coil pack, the same port is still not providing a spark, although the port labeled "4" on the coil pack works perfect with both coil packs, so I was wondering what the issue could be, as it seems a very odd coincidence that the same port would be faulty on 2 packs

As the car is about 90 minute drive away from me, I won't be able to try it again until this weekend, but I will also try a code reader and see what fault is returned
