Thermostat Change

I'm looking to change out the Thermostat on my 2000 1.2 8v MK2 Punto.

I have the part and tools here and ready to go but i cant find it anywhere, i've searched and tried to find guides but cant find anything.

If anyone could point me in the right direction that would be great or have a picture of where its located that would be even better.

Cheers for any info.

Re: Thermostat Change

Right hand side on the engine it's sticking out of the head with a pipe attached to it, remove the air filter for better access. Ps held on by two 10mm bolts

Re: Thermostat Change

On right side of the engine - looking towards the back of the car, below valve cover you will see about 1 inch pipe leading from the engine to the top of the the radiator. Wel,l this pipe is conected to the engine by the thermostat. You can't see metal pipe of the thermostat because it is stucked into the hose.

For pictures use google image...

why are you changing it?

Re: Thermostat Change

Thanks for the help folks, just changed it out there.

Was having problems with the engine temp, was never showing any rise in temp on the dash, so i was guessing that my engine was always running cold due to stuck open thermostat, lot of knocking going on, anyway replaced it there and shes running smooth again.

Happy days

Re: Thermostat Change

Make sure you run it upto temperature to sensure no leaks under full pressure and running

and that you bleed all of the lovely lovely air out

But yes - a good working stat will save you bucket loads in the long run

The ecu will always see the engine as been cold - bung **** tones of fuel in to try and warm it up

lazy stat = Nvere warms up = more fuel

See where im heading?

Good! Enjoy the task its simple and easy

Right i can hear lots of water splashing about when i start the car, i didnt bleed the the coolant, i can see the valve on the rad its just like a thumb screw but cant see the second one, ive been told to look at the pipe on passenger side, i can see kinda like 3 pipes in a T shape and theres a kinda valve on it with a normal flathead screw on it is this it???

And when bleeding do i need to keep topping up the tank until water comes through or should it just come out with out the need of topping up say like a radiator in the home.

I read the guide but it doesnt make sense to me

Sorry but im a noob and havent a clue, but i do try.

Re: Thermostat Change

Its cool i found it

Car is driving me mental

Changed the plugs, leads

Changed oil, oil filter, air filter.

Checked coil packs by disconnecting them one at a time and car starts fine on both.

Changed out o2 sensor and check voltage 0.1-0.2 - 0.6-0.7

Changed the map sensor

Changed thermostat.

Had timing belt, tensioner and water pump done.

And the car is still knocking and jumping really bad, and still getting only about 26mpg

The only thing left i can think of is the head gasket is on the way out

Re: Thermostat Change

If you changed all that, i presume it also took you some time to do it.
Signs of failed HG would be noticable in a matter of one week and in two weeks or less it would already be "game over" - temperature in red zone, bad missfire, white smoke, bubbles in the coolant with engine running etc.
