sitting idle in my 53 punto for 10-15 minutes today i noticed a burning smell, when i opened the bonnet there was smoke comming from the coolant fan motor. is there any other reasons than just the motor being burnt out that this could have happened?

cheers

Maybe if it got full of water. But I'd expect the results of that to be permanent and just as bad.

You'd expect the fuse to protect the wiring to the fan, but wise to give it a quick visual.

New fan and motor, OE or a similar sized aftermarket one from RatSport or Car Builder Solutions (generally both cheaper and better, but a little simple DIY involved).

when a took it into the car garage they said it could be the head gasket that has blown but i dont see this as a reason for the coolant fan motor to burn out.

Nor me.

BUT a faulty cooling fan might result in the HG going.

If in doubt, take to another garage and get them to do a compression test. Post the results here.

Replacing the fan is a simple enough DIY job -- an 8 year old could do it with adequate supervision -- but the FIAT ones are not cheap (except by Mercedes standards).
