Hi folks,,am new to the forum as from a week ago and already received good advice,,,here goes,,,i need to know the interval between oil change on my newly aquired 2001 punto,Also the mot man told me that the sump has a pinprick in it and a very very small amount of engine oil is leaking, could this be right,
thanks a lot,Sue.

if you dont know the history then just treat it to oil and filter
10/40 semi synthetic approx 3 litres needed plus the correct oil filter as found usually via your number plate

as regards oil leak in sump, if rest of sump is solid and you can clean it up with thinners on a rag and no loose bits you can cover the pinprick with jb fastweld but you would still need to leave it 12 hours for it to cure and also do this with old oil removed so you cant drive it

alternative is a new sump at £35 plus minimum 2 hours labour plus possibility exhaust might turn to dust when disconnected

its up to you to roll the dice:)

Thanks for the info,,,what is the oil change in miles please after i do it today ?

Best change it every year at the longest or 9000 miles is the Fiat suggestion if that comes first. I change even earlier if the colour is going too black looking. New oil will be honey coloured on the dipstick and with time it goes darker and darker. Not very scientific but I wouldn't hang around waiting for 'x' miles or the car's birthday if the oil was black.

If you repair the sump, I would paint the repaired section with hammerite and the coat in multipurpose grease for a bit of added protection during the winter months

IF there is 1 pin prick
What says you repair this hole behold - another dribble emerges

or worse - your driving along and a weak spot opens up and pooof goes all your oil and possibly your engine depending how long it takes to notice or for the engine to destroy itself

My advice - Replace

Oil sump aint that hard - but i recommend the manifold comes off :)

manifold comes off eaisly if you have a decent socket to fit bolts
AND if you have a nice socket extension - allowing you to get the inner bolts with ease
This can be done when its warm to aide removal
But if you dont have a extension suitable - has to be done when cool

lots of penatrating oil does help

dont forget Sealant and that the Gearbox Lower cover also has to come off

you obviously havent repaired many sumps then because an assessment is all thats needed
you usually find the leak is where the oil level in the sump stops and this is why they rust here so a localised repair if done in time is more than sufficient
im sick of seeing bodged sumps peeing oil out because its not been replaced properly
and a bit of paint and a coating of grease stops further rust dead then on its 6 monthly safety check confirm grease still there ,it always is on the ones i maintain ,but then these same cars dont drive through floods and pestilence that might wash this grease off

not aimed at you zigg just a generalisation of previous posts

I assumed our sump was rusted out when I saw the leak and general bubbles in the paint but when it came off I couldn't see the pinprick hole even though I knew exactly where it was and it was sound throughout inside. With hindsight it probably could have been repaired in situ - for a while at least. Probably depends on how early you catch it. Had to do it twice cause I got the sealer wrong the first time and I broke the exhaust.

I just gently rub down and respray my sump with a rattle can of black paint after each oil / filter service to keep the sump looking new and rust free, only takes 10 seconds to give it a quick spray over and its done until the next service.
