Technical whining noise??

Technical whining noise??

So the noise increases and decreases in volume and pitch based on revs

What you need todo is see if the noise is different when you dip the clutch
And then try been out of gear with the clutch up

While rolling down the hill - try lightly applying the brakes - does it magically disappear?

Sounds interesting, think I may same issue. But I have a new clutch. Are you sure its only when revving as I get it sometimes when not. Its very quiet mind and intermittent

@ the OP, does it do it when the car is in gear, out of gear, or both?

But -- if it does it with the car at standstill, you could use a stethescope to narrow down the source of the noise.

Clutch -- as suggested by Ziggy -- will tell if it is clutch thrust bearing or input shaft bearing, but it could be a number of other things.

:yeahthat: First on my list as well. Typically worse accelerating in low gears and can even happen with a brand new tensioner if you get the tension wrong.

Cam belt idler wheel? lol if only I was a mechanic. Best get a check up on mine, will this affect it running a little fast when stationary and Punto31 are you having the same?

Let us know what he finds although we may have seperate issues and I will try to listen to where my noise comes from, its so quiet and infrequent I may have to wait for it to get worse to know. I just noticed it more when not accelerating though. Good luck

Will let you know as soon as I do bud, will get it looked at hopefully next week

I think I have the exactly the same problem as you guys, as of late, the sound seems to get even louder. Quite embarrassing when people look at you, when your in a ****ty fiat banger that is gold!

I can't really describe the noise, but it sounds like a whinning noise an alarm clock would make, it's terrible, it goes away after awhile, but the noise was constantly going for 3 - 4 minutes before it stopped.

really wondering what the heck is it!

I have a strange rough whining noise coming from under the bonnet of my 04 punto.

Ususally heard when warmed up and travelling at speed but intermittent.

I thought it was the fan but this appears to be working ok.

Would be grateful for any ideas....thank you

At speed, very unlikely to be fan.

More likely cam belt tensioner. Stethescope will confirm. Change belt at same time, easy DIY if 8v. You break all forum etiquette by tacking onto someone else's thread, but shouldn't treat this as a put down: posting your own thread is easy and helps you as well as those trying to help you.

And welcome! ;)

thank you for your suggestion I shall look at that..........

........ and thank you for the welcome :)
