HI,
I have a 2002 mk2 punto jtd, after about 40 mins driving, gears 1 - 3 become difficult to select. The bite on the clutch is always low and pumping it makes no difference. I have changed the gear box oil and greased the selector cables but still the same.
Any ideas?

Not really what i wanted to hear, it is funny that it is only 1 - 3 then 4 the warmer it gets. I changed the gearbox oil about a month ago so that should be ok. sometimes it can give me problems at a junction, then 100 yards up the road it will be fine.

I was hoping that it would be clutch slave cylinder or bleeding or something cheap.

Always start cheap - it could be an issue - esp if the brake fluid has never been changed, it could be that 4 and 5 havent been used enough and havent been affected

Bleed - and see where you get too

The fluid in the reservoir looks clean, although the breaks feel a little spongy, I followed the hose back from the slave cylinder and there is a big rusty lump on the metal line part,on the side under the battery box. Looks like some sort of filter or smaller reservoir. Could any of this be part of the problem?
 
I believe it should be there, but just not rusty. I don't know what it actually is.
 
Just an update to help anyone with the same problem. Turned out to be the master clutch cylinder. It seems that with use the seals start to leak and push the fluid the wrong way back into the reservoir resulting in the clutch not separating properly.

I had the clutch kit ready, saved myself a days work though.
 
I changed the slave last week, didn't make much difference so had to do the master on the pedal.
