Hello!

I own a Punto mk2 (2002) 1.2 16v Speedgear. The car has ABS+EBD. I was wondering if it is possible to retrofit it with an ESP capable ECU from newer mk2b punto or TCS from mk2 HGT punto.

Has anyone ever tried this modification? What would I need? Are the Braking system's ECU the same for all models?

I would say no, the system is ridiculously complex and it really wouldn't be a case of plug and play, you would need to swap essentially the whole electrical system of the car for it to work, as your older engine ecu body computer and dash wouldn't be equipped with the relevant software/hardware to work with the much newer tcs stability control system.

Also your car will have abs I would be surprised if it has ebd?

Most Fiats from turn of the 00s have EBD.

Agreed that retro fitting ESP isn't really feasible or doable. It's more than just a different ECU - yaw sensors for example won't be fitted on a model without ESP.

Someone thinks they can do it in the Stilo section, but seems unsuccessful to date.

don't they use the abs sensors?

You'd have thought so, however Panda Active without ABS has EBD according to Fiat, and local dealer tech (haven't a clue how it works though).

Break force requirement might be established using a diffferent method other than ABS sensors maybe

EDIT: Fiat and dealer tech must have been wrong, like you say Dave, uses ABS system according to this [ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_brakeforce_distribution[/ame]

However as OPs car has ABS it should have EBD I'd have thought.

EBD - as in when your car is understeering the inner wheels will brake for you to help pull you back on course?

If so - thats not just done with ABS tho, thats TC related surly? as its a basic form of traction control to monitor direction

Ziggy

No EBD is Electronic Brake-force Distribution, completely different to traction control or Electronic Stability Control. (y)
