right, i have just bought a punto active sport on a 52 plate for my daughter,
on the last mot it has an advisory note saying...
002 nearside front headlamp affected by the operation of another lamp (1.7.5c)

now having checked all the lights i have noticed the problem, when the dipped headlights are on and working , if you switch the main beam on, the nearside main beam bulb does not come on, but if you switch off the dipped lights and use the main beam as though you are flashing someone the nearside main beam does come on but not as bright as the drivers side.

and also the bulb warning light on the dash is coming on.

any ideas on how to fix this , would appreciate any help thanks

Most likely a plug or earth problem. Have a look at the plug at the headlight bulb in question they can corrode and cause high resistance over time. Have a look at the headlight plug for signs of corrosion. You could also clean up the earth on the n/s inner wing although that would affect both sides so the plugs are probably the best place to start

will try that, do i just try to clean it with a wire brush or would it need replacing.

The plug at the bulbs are a hard plastic that goes brittle and breaks up when it overheats , not much point in trying to clean up as replacements are cheap. The multipin plug at the back of the headlamp can be cleaned up if the damage is not too bad - melted wires etc probably time for a new one. While you're in there could check that the bulb is the right wattage.

is it a main dealer purchase or can you advise anywhere on line to buy them
i do apreciate your help:)

Try your local factor first , the bulbs are standard. Just make sure they understand it's for a headlamp. Check the manual if you have one , fairly certain it is a H7 55W.

as brendan says
i would add that there is an earth wire goes to the body of the headlight in the middle bulb find this and you wil;l see theres another earth female bracket sticking out ive had much success with mk2 puntos swapping this lead to here
of course as brendan says it might well be in the multiplug socket that is difficult to get to

right ok, now i have the car in the drive i have had further looks and it appears the plugs look in new condition, i cannot however find the earth refered prevoiusely but have discovered a new symptom if you like, all the lights on the nearside are dimmer than the drivers side, indicators work as should just dimmer however and this is where it gets confusing when i switch the main beam on, not only does the nearside not come on but the indicator is constantly on instead.:bang: help......

also the dipped headlight plug has 3 black wires going to it and the indicator is like a grey plug which aain has 3 grey wires going to it , cant even tell which is earth/negative or live

Sounds like a problem at the multipin plug behind the headlight unit. The indicator and main beam share the same earth but juice intended for the main beam is leaking across and finding it's way to ground through the indicator. Follow the cable from the back of the headlight till you find the plug and open it up see if there is any sign of corrosion or overheating.
Follow the cables from the battery -ve to the earths on the inner wing. Cleaning them up would do no harm. The main beam live on that side is green/black and the indicator live is pink/white. Both earths are balck.

ok, thanks everyone for your help, the problem is now fixed. it turned out someone had put the indicator bulb in the wrong way and it must of been pulling on the box slightly below, thats the only thing i altered so must have been that .:)

i had this problem and it turned out to be a relay in the fuse box in side the car seating area, i cleaned the contacts and it seemed to stop it.
