If you have 12v engine you will have 2 camshafts and 2 camshaft sprockets these are wheels that the timing belt runs on, if you have 12v the top of the enging will look masive, the timing belt cover on an 8v will be about 6" wide the cover on a 12v will be about double this. 12v engines often have this writen on top of the engine.

I thought (probably wrong) that if it is a Mk1 or mk1 uplift all Puntos had their power rating in the name. If it is badged then that should be a good clue.

The 16v engines were fitted in the Sporting, 85ELX and 85SX on the mark 1.

Agree with Dave the engine on the 16V looks massive in the engine bay.

The other way to tell - How does it go ? If it feels reasonably rapid :) as against average the chances are it is 16V.

I've looked for a guide to FIAT VIN numbers on the web and have never managed to find one, I have found them for other manufacturers but for some reason FIAT does not feature.
