Hi All,

Need to get the starter motor out of my 2001 sporting, is it as much of a pain in the arse as it looks? Not much access from the top is it easier to get it from underneath?

Any tips appreciated

I presume it's the same method as the non-sporting models, jack the car up put axle stands under the car and the starter motor is located near the gearbox mount you should be able to see it if you put a light on it. I believe you'll also need a 13mm spanner/socket to remove the bolts and remember disconnect the battery before doing anything!

It's a good 20 minute job maybe less if your quick with your hands, but rushing it always leads to problems :p

Good luck!

to add to bennyyboy's excellent post
one of the bolts is on top of the bellhousing ie below the thermostat and to the back right a nudge
there is only 2 bolts
the wires on the starter are 10mm and 13mm bolted they might need a tickle of oil to help em on their way
you will always know a punto ive worked on as the black plastic cover on the wires never makes it back on:D

If it was anything like my starter motor replacement a few months back, I had to rip off the earth wire that was soldered onto the damn thing (dead starter) :D but then I had to buy one of those rings and crimp it to the earth wire then bolt it on to where it needed to go. But you only need a 10mm maybe a 13mm for the top wires starter to battery/starter to alternator, then the earth is a 10mm but don't quote me on that cause that's how my punto is setup in terms of the starter motor

Some starters have those "wire" cases on em
Wasn't till i was playing in the local scrap yard today till i saw how you do it :)

What with the earth soldered onto the starter? I always wondered how you'd actually get round that without yanking it off then make your own connection...but then again at the time of doing it I guess I got a little impatient :D cause I had to travel a long distance hours later of fitting it, but that said I've had no problems whatsoever with the way I've done it so I'm not complaining. But if you know the way of doing it I'd be interested to know for future references, it's always good to learn new ways of doing stuff ;)
