Hi,

Sounds like a fuel pressure sensor or regulator problem, the regulator is tricky but easy to change, without having to remove the hp pump. Its located to the rear of the hp pump with 2 torx t30 screws. Fed with 2 wires cant rember how to check wires i think your supposed to have a 12v feed. The regulator should buzz when 12v applied to it. This device regulates the high pressure fuel being fed to the common rail. The pressure sensor is located on the end of the rail. The pressure sensor has 3 wires, i ha to cut into mine and measure the voltages, 1 line is 5v, the other 0.5v signal line, the other earth, iginition on. When cranking it the signal line should reach approx 2v and drop slightly when started. Sounds to me your fuel pressure is ok at start up but perhaps isn't reduce for idle hence the ecu is switching the engine of. Eddy 07720 321009
Wonder if you can tell me the procdure for change the crank sensor, i cant re call removing a grommet ?.

Eddy - I think you might be onto something as the HP fuel pump has been changed and it made no difference whatsoever.

Actually, if the pump has been changed then so has the regulator.

That only leaves the sensor...

Tried the car with the sensor unplugged as I'd read it would revert to a default setting. The car started as usual but in limp mode (as expected) - it wouldn't rev over 3k - but then 5/6 seconds later did its usual and died.

So I've tried changing the LP pump, HP pump (and therefore regulator), crank sensor, fuel filter and have had no joy. Still not getting any fault codes on FES other than when I purposefully disconnected the fuel pressure sensor.

I'm not getting any immobiliser lights so I'm assuming it's not that.

Is there anything else I can try before biting the bullet and towing it to a garage? Or setting it on fire... :bang:

maybe something to do with the fuel cutoff switch under the glovebox?

I've made sure that's pressed down but I guess I could check that the switch itself isn't broken.

Ok it's not a fuel problem.

I removed the air intake to the inlet manifold this morning and the car started and stayed running perfectly.

It's clearly an air supply problem. I guess I need to work back and find if there's a hole somewhere.

Where mechanically could there be a blockage/restriction? Turbo? Intercooler?

So there's a butterfly valve within the air intake that is controlled by what I assume is a vacuum pipe plugged into a small black box with an electrical plug on it.

That vacuum is pulling the butterfly valve closed and starving the engine of air.

Pull the vacuum pipe off the black box and the valve stays open and the car starts without any issues (y)

So for now, I've left the vacuum pipe disconnected - doesn't appear to have any adverse effects on the engine and at least the car works.

Anyone know what the black box is?

Hello!

I noticed last message is ages ago,

However i have the same problem with an 1.9jtd engine
Starts but dies. Also the problems started directly after refuelling.

Did you solve it??
THX

I had the same problem with a petrol MK2B. It would start and then die, to keep it going I had to sit my my foot on the throttle for about 15 seconds then it would idle just fine. When warm, zero issues. Then the trip computer would reset after turning the car off and leaving it for a few minutes.
Turned out to be the battery!

Fly by wire throttle..

no power: no throttle input

Disaster to try and bumpstart one.. :(
