has anyone had this before: i have a 1.2 8v and had the car about a month so far, when i first got it i would start the car and the water temp light would go out straight away but now when i start the car from cold in the morning it stays lit on my dash until about 15 to 20 mins of driving.

is this normal or should it have gone out straight away like before?
theres no water leaks and im not losing any coolant/water im just really curious as to why. :hm:

go to a garage asap to get it checked....
this light it is supposed to open when the motor is overheating...

exept from those you said it may be brocken flange or maybe nothing..... go and check it!!!!!!!

Not supposed to be like that. Most likely the sensor or wiring. I would check the plug area for corrosion and wiring damage and for what it costs change the sensor. If the wiring goes open circuit the yellow eml lamp would come on with the red temp lamp.
No harm to do a full functional check of the coolant system. Start cold and let idle. After 5 mins or so the top hose should start to get warm fairly fast as the thermostat opens ( slow warming not good) then the bottom hose gets hot after another 5 mins or so and then the fan comes on. No gurgling sounds in the heater area on start up either.

The red overheat light wont come on....
That light will only come on if the temperature exceed its parameters received

if no signal is received how can it come on?

Only the Red/yellow EML will come on, along with the engine fan all the time

If you pull the plug before starting the temp lamp comes on when you start and won't go out. Open cct warning. Then fan comes on then after 10s or so. If you then reconnect the lamp goes out , the fan stops after about 5s but if you pull it again with the motor still running the lamp does not come on.
The sensor is not really sending a signal it's modulating the current sent by the ecu which has to stay within limits.
I don't have a temp guage so am a bit paranoid about the sensor.

You must have a different version ECU to me
The old punto you pulled the plug - just the EML came on
Hot or cold
before or after starting

Possible. They way I figure it is that the sensor cct and warning lamp have to be checked by the ecu so it sends a voltage out when the ign is switched on and if it gets back a sensible answer from the sensor return wire it's good to go. Nothing to do with temperature just is the thing working or not.
