Hi i have a 53 punto and i found today that sometimes its taking quiet a while to shift up gear, it ends up revering really loudly. I took it to a garage as my bonnet woudn't open and it turns out the cable has snapped. They also said that they think my clutch has gone. Is this right, has anyone else had this, they say it could cost hundreds, im gutted and fed up only had the car five months.

Hi its a dualogic gearbox.

The garage says that the bonnet lever breaking is a common fault with the punto, they said that it starts seizing up which means that you have to pull the lever up harder and then the lever ends up breaking, thats whats happened with my bonnet lever, which has resulted in the cable breaking so the bonnet can't be opened.

Not long after i bought the car when driving the accelerator would lose power when the car was stopped at a round about or a junction, i would have to turn the engine off and back on to sort it out. I took it to the garage and they fixed that problem. Then i had to get a new battery as the car wouldn't always start.

Now i have this problem with the gears.

Just looked at the two links, when i set off it goes in to first gear fine, its when it then needs to go up to second, the car is going but revering away like mad as its not in a high enough gear, then it goes in to second and then does it again for third. Then sometimes it goes into gear with no problem. This only really started yesterday.

bonnet cable snapping is sortable no special tools just half hour and a new cable
the gearbox not shifting - gearbox error light?
- is better or worse with lights on or off?
-correct fluid? + level?

Hi Ziggy

I took the car to the garage this morning and they said they are going to put a new cable in. They are going to then check to see if its the clutch.

When its not going into gear, no light comes on. I have had it come up a couple of times before yesterday where it said engine failure, but the engine still worked fine. Also it said sidelight failure a couple of times, when i haven't even got my lights on.

Im not sure about the fluid.

If its an automatic gear box it most likely just needs to be serviced which is fairly handy just screw out a little bolt off the gear box drain the oil and replace with new oil your local auto factors will know which oil to use if it was the clutch she just wouldn't pull herself along it would be slipping is there any shuddering out of the gear box at any time and the next time you drive it just barely give her enough throttle to nicely pick up speed shell hit a certain rev should stay there for a few seconds and shift up a gear definitely sounds like a service is needed on the gear box I've seen this before on automatic cars always get a second opinion anyway :)
