i've bought a punto 04 1.2 8v a month ago
the car was really good but after 1000 kms it started to consume petrol like a hungry monster
then on day i started the car check engine led on and sometime it doesn't light up
last thing that the car idles badly - revs go down and stops - and sometime it doesn't rev up when i kiss the pedal

can anyone tell me what's going on and how to fix this ?

Well if you have an engine light come on, you'll have a fault code in there. Get it read and it may help you isolate the problem.

dont kiss the pedal its dirty and full of germs
with regards high fuel consumption you need to do a basic check of things like sticky brakes/filters/tyre pressures etc
then move on to things like data from the ecu via a local garage or a good code reader with live data or fiatecuscan
also an emissions test would be a pointer with data gathered to help you fix the underlying problem if it is engine related

i'd suspect a dying lamba, or faulty intake sensor

As they could be why the EML (engine managment light) comes on and off
and as to why its unable to maintain its idle

Fault code will certainly help there

Also as s+b said, ensure the tyres are upto pressure and no sticking brakes

thanks everyone for your help.
it turned out to be a dead fuel pump!
changed it and the car is working fine now.
about the fuel consumption . tires and filters are ok. also no error on lambda sensor
guess i'll change spark plus as i don't know their history and also the lambda sensor as well and see how things will go

A lamba sensor can fail - and NOT produce a fault code for it

you need to monitor the voltages coming out the LAMBA to see what its doing

If the Pre-cat - should bob up and down ALOT
Post - should remain fairly consistant, near the middle (0.5v)

I had a problem of fuel average too , as soon as I got the air filter changed immediately made a difference. Also if you are driving in low speeds and not going on lots of highways your average will get effected, but the air filter should help
