hi folks im new here my wife just bought a punto year 2000 and the big end bearings have gone i figure engine swap to be the best option

will the same engine go straight in without any ecu problems or do i need the ecu from the donor vehicle ?

punto year 2000

vehicle id-00064305
engine id-188a4000
188bxa1a

any help would be great as i know little about these cars

you need the ecu from yor engine for new engine to work
dont get rid of the old engine till new one up and running in case any parts need changing over
your car is pre cam sensor bolted onto rocker cover but later engine will work fine just ignore this sensor

hi thanks for the reply would i be better getting an engine with the cam sensor and leaving it dissconnected as mine doesnt need it as i'll probably get a newer engine with lower miles or would the fuel economy suffer by leaving the cam sensor disconnected

A Non Cam sensored car can have a cam sensored engine - just dont plug it in

however i dont think you can the other way around - never been able to test swapping rocker covers

1 word of advice - since i did this recently

Drop both the engine and gearbox onto a carpet
Raise the car super high as you can
pull the engine out
Lower car down

Check the clutch and input bearing - if you need new soon - do it now, while its all apart

Ensure the Clutch Slave cylinder isn't able to eject its piston - ie put a cable tie on it

Ensure you dont damage the ECU wiring, or do what i did and snap the starter motor connection and alternator wiring at the plugs - needed to fit new connectors as a result

If you can..... the best way is with either an engine crane, if you don't want to buy one of those,
I use a hook on the garage roof joist or a hook on anything overhead that is super strong, then I have a pulley assembly which easily lifts the engine up

like this one - but mine is better - this one is cheap as chips

To answer your question.... you just need your own original ECU.
