Hi all. After a tiny bit of advice if possible please? I have a 1.2 punto elx mk2 (2001). Taken my car to a garage as I have been hearing a clunking noise from front offside tyre region lately. It's when I set off, stop, break, reverse or turn right (though not so much now the last issue). I would liken it to say maybe a noise similar to something being rocked (eg water in a tank where is it heavy and clunking on metal sides - strange analysis I know!).

I spoke to a couple of people who said it could be CV joint/driveshaft/lower suspension arm. I took it to my local garage for an on the spot check and after raising it up on the ramp, wobbling the wheel etc the mechanic said it is the shock absorber and top mount that is causing it. Me not knowing much about cars followed him around as he showed me the difference from offside and nearside. I could see bit of corrosion to be fair.

What I would like to know is if this sounds like a valid analysis of the noises and whether a quote of £143 (parts plus labour) is reasonable. I did manage to get £43 off to get that figure by being cheeky too. I am getting rid of the car come November so I do not want needless money spent on it or for them to ring me on the day saying we have found something else - I know garages are notorious for doing that!

Please help if possible and remember to dumb it down for me :) thank you!!

its too dear
go to another garage and ask them to confirm top mount failed and how much to replace
the top mount and shocker are 2 different things so you are being robbed

The reason that both parts are being replaced is because the shocker has started to leak. Top mount looked a bit corroded. The reason given was due to the leak etc it was best to change the two parts - though I have slept since then so can't fully remember what the mechanic said.

Should mention that the price quoted included labour and wheel alignment too.

However the diagnosis is what concerns me really not the price. I don't want work done for no reason that's all.
