Hi Guys.

new to the forum.

Wife has an X reg Punto Mk2
It has developed the power steering fault. (no power)

Have read on of the guides on here that suggests it could be one of the relays in the motor and how to replace them.

however on doing further research i cam across a video on you tube that shows a possible Temp Fix, by removing the 60 Amp fuse in the engine fuse box, then starting the car, leave to run then replace the 60 Amp fuse whilst run, and the fault has gone.

Tried it with mine and the fault has gone..

Does anyone know what this does??? the guy on the video suggests its the EPS fuse, but has this got something to do with the ECU??

Suggestions gratefully appreciated.

Regards

Lee.

power steering fault is common on puntos,

it happend to me, i seen the same video on youtube but i wouldnt trust it,

i fixed mines by buying a second hand power steering motor,

common problem on an x reg remember its 12 year old
do as kashem58 suggests because failure will return and his suggestion is cheapest option if chosen wisely

I understand which is why the Video is called a Temporary fix

Thanks but the original question was what does this temp fix doing.
i.e by removing the fuse is it resetting the ECU or maybe removing power to the relay. which is unsticking the contact, this would give an indication, if by replacing the motor it will actually fix the fault or by some chance its a problem with the ECU

I'm the one that made that video, my conclusion back then when making the video was I blamed it on the EPS fuse but until I had the fuse tested it was perfectly fine but it can be the case on a rare basis for fuses to die on you. But that fix will temporary reset your PS motor which then allows you to drive with assistances, but I wouldn't rely on this all the time I would follow what the other guys have suggested by replacing the motor I have done since making that video and it's hasn't failed since :) Good luck!

Thanks mate, I'm in no doubt it was only a Temp fix, it was more of an interest in what actually removing and reinserting did, clearly it must reset the ecu ?

am looking at replacing the relays in the motor first, if that doesn't work a full motor replacement .

If you do decide to replace the power steering motor, dont buy it straight away ask if you can test it first, am sure scrap yards will let you test it before hand might even borrow you the tools to open the motor if you ask,

I have just bought a punto with the power steering not working at all. I took off the power steering motor and peeled off the thick rubber gasket this will enable you to see the 6 thicker wires inside. Take a note of the order get a soldering iron and release them, then there are 4 small screws to undo. Once removed as above you can slip the circuit board out and re- solder the dry joints its so easy honestly!!!. Put it back together and hope sorted. Did mine yesterday it looked messy my soldering skill are crap but it worked power restored. I am told that most of these fail due dry solder joints. You have nothing to lose if its not working !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I removed the motor and took it to bits,

I did noticed what was possibly 2 dry joints on one of the relays, Re-soldered put back together and it seems to be fine again,

Hopefully this has fixed it and it nots just the fact the car hasn't been used in a couple of days, only a short test drive but working fine.

only time will tell
