Good Morning,

Tonight i was driving home in the go i brought at the weekend drove through a reasonably deep puddle approximately 10 MPH and i got around the corner and the engine management light came on and it went all judders and no amount of revs could stop it from stalling on me.

I tried to restart but to no avail after trying for about 15 Minutes i managed to start it and creep it home slowly and gently with very high revs.

Now i don't want this to ever happen again as i lost total control of the car, and it was an accident waiting to happen thankfully it was evening and dark

Any advice, from reading there may be a cover missing off my engine which i will take photos and upload tomorrow, from reading i also hear a new air filter cover may be needed to better protect it, but its hard as i am not a car person and don't know if it is specific to my issue.

All help will be gratefully received

There are many possible issues. A code read may give you a clue.

Worst case scenario is that the engine injected sufficient water to run hydraulic on one cylinder and has bent a conrod.

More likely:

The air filter is soaked. Remove and gently dry out.
The ignition leads got damp which is causing HT current to leak out (spray with WD40).
One of the sensors got drenched. A code read will give you a clue as to which. Again, WD40 or the carefull application of a hair dryer should sort it.

If you're lucky, the car will be as right as rain (ahem) tomorrow.

I am guessing it will be, but is there away for me to stop it happening again, as i don't want to have to go thought that everytime I go though a puddle or get splashed?

If possible could you give me a link to the correct software and cable(s) for my car *Punto* Go 1.2 (51 Plate) and where i can find out how to use it?

Thanks

If you drive through deep puddles at speed, it will happen again. I know it's not deliberate, but....... Using silicon grease on HT contacts and sensors should help. About £8 from a motor factor, less on eBay.

A search should find Fiat ECU scan, with details of cables, etc. Alternatively, the car is OBD 2 compliant, so anyone with a code reader should be able to do it for about £25.

meh I used to do this all the time in early Mondeos because the engine air intake was so low to the ground, basically used to soak the air filter, like fingers said.

could be HT leads if you properly soaked the engine bay, puntos seem a bit sensitive in that department, but I would be doubtful of it being a sensor as they are all weather sealed and soaking the waterproof connector plugs even if water did get in it its unlikely to stall the engine.
