Hi i have a 01 Fiat Punto Mia and i cant remember when my car accepted petrol ive just grinned and beared it for a while now but its fustrating when trucks are filling fasting than me!.

Anyway it seems when i start filling up it clicks to say the tank is full immediatly and i have to nurse the fuel in which takes ages and skill! any ideas what this is or a cheap fix?

Hmmm im pretty sure ive tried almost EVERY angle including risking it being half out, any specific angle works for you ?

where do you fill up as i find morrisons does this but tescos is ok

I had an '04 1.2 and had exactly the same issue, if you put it in just far enough to open the flap thing then it's fine, just take it steady first time so you don't spill it out.

Standard fayre on a punto unfortunately, youve just gotta get the angle of the dangle right!

All down to air not fuel. Holding the nozzle just inside the flap as mentioned above though is not a good idea! One slip and your clothes will smell like a refinery for the rest of the day. However there is a simple solution used by us lorry drivers every day. Having to put in on average 300 litres on a slow pump makes your fingers numb as you can imagine if the pump lock or anti syphon keeps tripping the nozzle. Something as simple as a bottle cap wedged in the pump handle will sort this. You just need to find the right size for the best flow rate without tripping the nozzle. You may find that Shell and BP stations don't do it at all...better pumps and better fuel.

But it just so happens in the UK to be against petrolium lisencing regulations to allow customers to do this! Hence why the catches that the pumps come with when new (you can see the holes they hinge into) are removed.

Petrol station attendants should be playing better attention and stopping the pump. They're in big trouble if found to have knowingly allowed you to do that.

how do they work? do they have a magnet that detects metal around the nozzle? ifso cant you somehow attach a piece if metal to the inside of the fuel downpipe?

No metal detectors involved, just a small pressure sensor to detect the pressure differences as the fuel level rises.
