Got a problem with my punto, its making a hissing noise, along with a tapping/ticking noise.

My brother (who is very good with cars!) Did an engine swap on it due to crash damage, so we bought a punto with a knackered engine and swapped our engine into it. Anyway when swapping the engine (sorry for my lack of knowledge  ) The star shaped little cog type thing on the gearbox that connects to the clutch? Has a metal ring around it, which in the engine swap we found out had sheared off. My brother seemed to think it would be ok so left it there and the only problem was a rattle in low revs, eg reversing or crawling in 1st.

On friday the car started making the noises i described so took it a garage, someone trusted i know through a friend. He said its the clutch release bearing has gone / on its way out. He then discovered the hissing noise goes away when the clutch is pressed, but the ticking/tapping noise stays.

Basically my brother is says it should be ok, as he thinks its just he metal thing that sheared off from the gearbox has got jammed. But the garage i took it to told me i need a new clutch fitting. He said he will get me a brand new clutch (not a refurb) and fit it for £140 with 2 year warranty (£80 labour), which i thought was a pretty reasonable price.

Just wanted to check on here what you think the problem may be as i dont want to have a new clutch fitted if the noise is just the sheared metal part and will still be there when the new clutch is on.

Thanks for any help :)
