my car is a punto active sport 1.2, the airbag light has been on for a while, but this year i believe it has become a mot failure so need to sort it out.

i brought an ecu scanner off amazon but it cant find the code for the air bag fault (Maxiscan Diagnostic Scanner CAN Code Reader OBD2 EOBD OBDII MS300: Amazon.co.uk: Car & Motorbike) so i have read on this forum of a cable you can buy off ebay to diy with a laptop. but im not sure which one to get, i havent got a solder iron so would rather get one ready to use. can someone link me please:)

edit; didnt think of checking amazon, are these the ones?? and is it cheaper from amazon or ebay??

top one wont read airbag, best check on fes site if it can do mk1 airbags and what adapter you need, mk1 is not obd11 http://www.fiatecuscan.net/

on a mk1 you can remove bulb and fit a non airbag steering wheel and remove pasenger air bag if it has one, then it will pass the mot as most mk1's didnt have airbag so tester wont expect to see one.
If the airbag light is on and/or they have passed there service date they probably wont work anyway

sorry, put this in the wrong bit. your right its a mk2 2003

FIAT PUNTO '03 1.2 8V

KL3 - KKL/VagCom interface with ADAPTER CABLE 2 (or modified interface with K-line connected to pin 3)
OBDKey 3- OBDKey 1.40 interface with ADAPTER CABLE 2 (or modified interface with K-line connected to pin 3)
A2 - ADAPTER CABLE 2

so from that i guess i need KKL/VagCom interface with ADAPTER CABLE 2 and the software to get this to work?

will this work FiatECUScan Cable Adaptors for Engine ECU, Airbag, ABS: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

Can anyone tell me exactly where are the connectors that can cause the airbag light to come on?

Mine says Passenger Switch intermittent fault. Ive cleared it a few times which sometimes its worked but every now and again you can see the red airbag light flash.

When it properly comes on both red and amber lights come on. Ive checked the system state and both airbags are active so its not like they wont deploy. Just irritating.

SOULZ, i had a similar fault on a customers punto last week, after numerous attempts at clearing the codes, fault was still bringing light on, so i took the ecu off and cleaned the terminals with leckie spray made sure the terminals on the loom were o.k. be careful though they are minute and bend easy, plug on and off a few million times and cleared the codes and hey presto i havent had the light up for a week. try that and see if it works, good luck.

The main ECU? As in on engine or is there an airbag ecu?

Also do i just spray the terminals and give them a wipe or leave it to stew for 5 ?

light will still come back, this is a well documented fault on here, an upgraded loom is required, it is less than a fiver from fiat, part number for it is even on here some where.

edit here you go

f0051786225
retail price £4.22 + vat

doing anything else and charging customers for it is just conning them.

Is it a partial loom upgrade so it would be something i can fit myself or will it be an electrician jobby?

Also do i just ring up fiat quoting that part number and order one?

so ive brought the cables to do this and the error that has come up for the airbag light is this
09 Passenger Squib Circuit - Value Too High - Intermittent - 103

From what i understand, the 'squib' is the explosive detonator for the passenger airbag, but i dont understand what the 'value too high' or 'intermittent' or '103' means in the fault code mean?? please help??

it means that the resistance value of the air bag (which the computer looks at to see if the airbag is ok) is intermittently too high.

it could mean you need a new passenger airbag or it could mean you have a faulty or corroded connection to that airbag. if you feel happy doing so it might be worth very carefully removing the airbag and giving the connections a good clean up first. with a solvent based electrical cleaning agent and a stiff bristled brush. put it back together and see if you can clear the fault. if that doesn't work look on ebay or in a scrap yard for a suitable replacement (unless you want to pay about £400 from fiat)

if you do remove an airbag always always disconnect the cars battery and leave for at least half an hour before you touch the airbags this is to allow the capacitors in the airbag ECU to discharge and prevents accidental detonation of the airbags when you start pulling plugs.
shorting the battery leads (as some will tell you to do) will have no effect as the airbag ECU has a circuit to prevent reverse charging so you MUST leave it half an hour at the very least

few things
mot failure for light on not coming in till summer
if you bulb doesnt light or flash then its not going to fail (make your own minds up)
i did a 4 code airbag on a 2b yesterday, for the record it was an 8 valve active and needed the kkl lead and the red? lead to clear the codes

low voltage
pass squib
side exclusion switch
something else

i put all these down to trying to start it on a flat battery, lights now out

i posted a few months back that i had a major problem with the pass airbag light and i solved it by changing the complete passenger airbag but thinking back i still think it was high resistence in the connecter to it
