iv just bought a 1.4 turbo punto and it was ok but i started driving it and after about a week wen i got to about 10psi on the turbo it started jolting everywer and cuts out everytime can u plz help ?????

ok cheers m8 will they no wer i can get it done do u no any good places to go wid a turbo punto 1.4

When you say it cuts out, do you mean the engine? Not sure why, but I'm thinking of some sort of sensor failure rather than a turbo problem. Do you get the engine indicator light (probably looks like a fuel injector) coming on at all?

Re: my turbo is playing up help

It sounds like you're over boosting and the engine protection is cutting in - theres a pressure switch on the back of the intake manifold that get's activated. Have you fitted a bleed valve or been adjusting the waste gate actuator arm since getting the car?

If it's you adjusting the boost rather than a genuine wastegate issue, you can adjust the over boost switch by screwing the screw clockwise

well it starts to judder then it like cutts out then once u let off the accelarator it goes ok if u drive it sensible its ok but wen u open her up it just judders and jumps all over the place ????????

Re: my turbo is playing up help

all i have done whilst driving the car is twisted the boost control inside the car that all and now it only runs ok wid no boost can u giv me some things to try to get this car goin ok again thanks

Has the GT got a boost gauge - what does the needle go up to if it has?

I'm just guessing a bit here, but if you're winding the boost up on a standard ecu, you'll get to a point where the ecu says 'Oi oi, that's too high, don't like this' and it effectively shuts down to protect the engine. This is what's referred to above.

When you say it's now running no boost I guess you mean standard boost (7 psi I think).

I used to own the 1.4 Uno turbo and adjusted this to run at 1 bar (14psi) peak by adjusting the wastegate actuator. I also had to adjust the over boost switch to allow the extra pressure without engine protection cutting in. From memory the switch is on the left of the intake manifold and you can get a fine screw driver into it to load up the spring inside.

What you need to remember is that FIAT have set the overboost sensor at it's current level to protect the engine. If you start winding up the boost without adjusting the fueling (through a map or rail pressure) the engine will run lean and eat itself. Other considerations such as lowering the compression ratio and an uprated charge air cooler need to be taken too.

My advise is if you don't know the history of the engine or what winding up the boost actually means, leave it alone or get a specialist to sort it for you. When I raised the boost on my Uno, a friend with an R5 Turbo did a similar mod to his so that it would keep up on track days. He then went through two head gaskets, a charge air cooler and finally melted two pistons. btw I work for a company that designs and manufactures turbo charged engines

ok thankyou so u think it could b several things what is the first thing you would try ???

sorry just wanna get this problem sorted its pi***ng me off so can anyone help and giv me the first thing to try bearing in mind im an 18 yr old boy thanks max !!!!

For now turn the boost controller right back (off) so that it's running standard boost. Get in touch with the previous owner and find out what (if anything) else has been done to the engine and post it back here.

I'm away for a few days so please be patient with the responses.
