I do a lot of short trips as am a delivery driver, would my car get any benefit from me using Castrol Magnatec Oil. and is it worth it for £28.99 for 4 litres.

If it's not worth using this oil, could any one recommend a good quality oil, for my car that does a lot of stop start work.

And correct amount for full change.

Thanks.

That oil is fine(y) I used it when i did short trips and never had any issues. Although i also changed the oil when 4 months - more because i had nothing better to do:p

the mk2 takes just under 4L (3.6L i think, not 100% though)

As long as the numbers are correct on the oil can, any oil is basically fine. As you say you do a lot of stop/start short trips. The best thing you can do is change the oil twice yearly. Oil snobbery can cost. Remember it's a billion pound industry & the power of clever advertising obviously works.

Just for the record, I ran a mk1 punto for about eight years & used halfords semi 10/40 changed twice yearly. Lots of short trips & lots of long trips, with no problems engine wise. Had the odd spirited run now & again.;)

My 2005 Mitsubishi Colt used Magnatec oil only. To save money I took the car to a non Mitsubishi dealer to get it serviced after the three years. Two days after I got a knocking from the camshaft on start up. This was 'caus they had filled with any old 10/40 oil. Drained oil and re filled with Magnatec and all was well. Never ever do that again.

Hydraulic tappets?

Short runs are probably not a big issue, provided there's no big gaps between them. The bulk temperature of the oil is the more critical factor.

But, yes, I'd go with doubling the frequency of oil and filter changes.

Agreed oil flows better when hot, but engine start is always the main point for wear in bearings, cylinders, etc.

It take a few turns of the crank to pump the oil through. After only a few minutes stopped, oil will have run out of the bearings which has to be pushed back when the engine starts. An additive such as MolySlip suitable for catalysts is worth having as it leaves a dry lube coating on the bearing surface.
