Hi Guys,

My punto sporting failed the NCT today :-(
Apparently the rear bump stops are worn (??)

I'd usually service the car myself - but never even heard of bump stops before??

What are they? Easy to fit myself with the help of my trusty Haynes manual? Are they expensive?

Also have to replace the window wiper linkage, apparently its loose - should be easy enough to stick a new linkage in.

Any help/advice regarding the 'bump stops' would be really appreciated!

Thanks in advance guys!

Howdy :)

You never said mk1 or mk2?

Either way this is what you are missing (taken from the Panda forum ;))

Or similar :)

For the love of goodness, do not go near the dealers for one, they will give you an eye watering price for one on its own!!!

If its a mk1, let me know, there's one here broken and bits of another one too (y)

certainly on a mk2
undo lower shocker bolts
jack car right up in the air on back end of sills (2 jacks are best)
unless antirolbar slows down anything pull the wheel down to get the spring out
then bump stop will fall out
cant see why they should be worn though as they should only work if car overloaded

Lads, thanks for the replies :)

Sorry - its the mk2 version. They sound fairly easy - I'll give it a go myself.

Taking onboard your advice not to go near a dealer for the parts - any idea where else stocks them?

Also, is this an indication that my rear suspension is f*cked?!

Cheers

My Punto failed on that bump stop as well, 2 new ones €21, as cheap as rooting in a scrap yard where most are f..ked as well, Jack up car, remove wheel, No need to loosen anything, ,remove stop from new plastic housing, push stop in through coils of spring, then push the stop into the old holder I used a flat blade screwdriver. Less than 5 mins in total. Part Number is 0046529067.(y)

thanks to digger,
I did my bump stop on mk2 punto in around 5 imns
I did not take the wheel off, I was a bit worried that the jack would crash into the bodywork, like what used to happen on he old mk1 Cortina's and anglias (in the early 70's) but everything went well

Hi Changed my bump stops & coil springs as well this week getting ready for NCT (MOT in Ireland) The springs were very corroded and the bump stops were flittered ( falling apart). The donor springs and bump stops came from a 2003 Punto which had 80000 miles at dismantling in 2009. My own car has 86000 miles and is a 2000 car. The bump stops flittered due to a combination of 3 heavy rear seat passengers and the traffic calming speed bumps.he suspension did not seen worn out. The coils off the 2003 car were perfect as it had been off the road since 2008 ( crashed, bought for spares). Unlike UK, we have only had a lot of salt on the roads since 2008 with the snow we got in winter since then. By the way, if you cannot squeeze the bump stop through the coils with the suspension extended - ie wheels at lowest travel & car jacked) I would recommend un doing the top shock absorber rather than the bottom if you are not replacing the shockabsorber as the lower bolt can seize in the frame ( bolt threads are liable to corrode)

Best regards
Ivor

I've just changed the rear bump stops on the Mk2 Fiat and followed the method suggested by digger58. Works a treat with no need to remove the spring. As he suggested just jack up the rear axle corner you're working on, remove the wheel and put a jack stand under the body somewhere strong (I put a stand under the rear bracket where the rear bumper fits to the frame rail) and lower the axle again with your hydraulic jack which will extend the coils of the spring. Then simply reach into the coil spring push out the old bump stop. Remove the new bump stop from its plastic housing and push the new bump stop between the coils of the rear spring and fit it into place using a flat blade screw driver.
This explanation saved me time and effort so thank you to digger58.

Its 2013.... but hey ho

Swapping is dead easy

Jack up car and let axle swing
Remove shock top bolts (bottoms notorious for seizing in)
Twist spring in holder while base still in car
Rust.make its crusty so wiggling back and forth helps

Spring out = trumpet left and u need to tease the 3 clips out and your good to go!
Refit is reverse!
The clips are brittle as hell

Take your time
