Hi, I've just noticed the sump is looking pretty bad on my mk2 I just wondered if there's anywhere I can get a cast aluminium one from? Looking at various peoples threads it seems to be a common problem with these and I don't want to keep replacing it.
Thanks
Dan

You could get one made Bespoke. If you took your old sump to a metal workshop and ask them to make the part in what ever you want. You won't get a perfect match because the sumps are pressed, but they should be able to cast a replacement. - however casting isn't as strong as a pressed part so you may need them to Heat treat the casting(y)

When my mk2 punto was 10 years old ,i noticed sump getting rusty.
I gave it 3 good coats of hammerite, and its been fine since.
If you just buy a new sump, and paint it regularly every 2 years,it will be fine,no need to get special one made up,car isnt going to last forever anyway!!!!!:slayer:

steel engine block + aluminium Sump = Electrolytic reaction = corrosion = leaking/sump dropping off

ok so a bit extreme perhaps but there is a good reason they used a steel sump on the steel engine, also steel dents and bends where as aluminium, especially cast, is expensive and will just crack if hit by a big stone or rock.

better to buy a new one and paint it all nicely with some good quality anti rust paint if you are that worried about it,

it took a quite few hours to remove the sump. breaking the sealant was hard enough.

i THINK it would have been quicker just to patch the hole rather than replace the hole thing. And i trust this guy so.
for the rust i would have used a new product we just got what i ave no idea how it works but it removes rust, and converts it somehow
