Hi guys,

Its my second fault to ask for advice :p Good Ole Punto :)

Right so im driving along fine, I then cannot find 2nd Gear i pull over and i cannot find any gears at all. For some reason it would find 1st and 2nd some times, upon testing it would not go any higher then 2nd. Also it couldn't find reverse.

I then call the recovery man to pick me and my car up. We take it back home and we have a little look at it. We found the issue. This is where my Technical Car knowledge is rubbish. We could see what looked like Metal cables coming from the gearbox (One for my clutch, one for the gears?). The Cables closet to the ground had its black plastic clip like thing (Sorry for the bad terms) Snapped and was just not clipped onto anything. This was the letting this Cable loose and i assume causing my gearbox to find 1st and 2nd sometimes. looking at the other cable it was find and was not lose.

So my question is.......... Where do i buy a new plastic part for that cable ? and how much will it cost to buy and get it fixed?

Thanks guys Much appreciated,

Ben :)

the punto uses a Hydrolic clutch mate

The Hydrolic clutch is ontop of the gearbox near the front of the car
its a plastic jacket with a Rubber gator and ball joint

the Cables you see are both gear selector cables
1 is lateral movement
1 is vertical movement

As for the clips, i would have thought the local parts shop should have something like in stock

But if 1 has failed, the other could be nearly there itself..... I'd be curious to find out if the cable itself has let go or not as well

Thanks for the quick reply !

Heres pictures of the two cables, Its the one furthest from the camera

your gear selector cable has broken internally just up from the gearbox balljoint
its common and more commoner daily on these cars
either replace the linkage box complete with a breaker replacement
or
take off the bottom cover of the gear selector in situ, not easy as the holding screws rot their heads out and just change the cable (it clips on both ends)
with choice one ,complete selector exchange, you have to undo front pipe to cat connector and this too can be a major problem if everything is old

pictures not required for my diagnosis

its not to do with the clutch, from what you are saying its the gear linkage cable that has broken or part of the cable housing.
