Hi

My car (in avatar) is making a very loud tapping sound when you push the clutch IN (when in any gear or even neutral)..

The noise seems to be coming from the gearbox..

It's been doing it for a fair while, at one stage it was intermittant, but now it is constant and even louder.

Any ideas? Here is a video of the noise. It starts when you push the clutch in (at 0:01), as soon as clutch is released (at 0:11) it stops.

Thanks

I think i paid about £200 a year ago for my clutch to be changed

While the gearbox is off tho
you MUST MUST MUST get the garage to check for play in the Input shaft

If the shaft is loose, spend the extra £100 having it replaced Now
Rather then another £200 on a new clutch change again and then the £100 for it been repaired

if the bearing is failing, the seal will fail too, spewing oil onto the clutch fowling it
Once fowled - its useless :(

Thanks for the advice everyone, I'm from Norwich.. Mr Clutch just phoned and said he can do it for £187 & its got a 2 year guarantee as well I think.

Got it booked in for Friday will post the outcome then & will ask them to look for other problems too

The car has done 115,000 miles now not sure how much longer it will last

Mr Clutch do not have a good reputation and they are very unlikely to check out the gearbox properly. Find a good small garage that survives on its reputation or risk doing the clutch again when the gearbox covers it in oil.

@ Most Easterly Pandas might be able to help.

Have took your advice and will be looking for somewhere else (also scared off mr clutch by the really bad reviews online!)

Can't risk going in and them not being sure whats making the noise, taking it apart and saying its gonna cost £1000s. Or worse replacing the clutch and not fixing the noise then fobbing me off.

Have noted the input shaft thingy down as well!

What part of Norwich are you in out of interest? I don't know anywhere in Norwich specifically for gearboxes and clutches, but have used the gearbox centre in Caister on Sea, for advise and they're top notch. Have always been recommended to me and I've yet to hear a bad thing about them, but it might be a bit of a treck for you.

Jon.

I'm 4 miles west of the city centre so caister would have been a bit far.. thanks anyway.

In the end I took it to Formula One Autocentre today as the Norwich branch had fairly good reviews online... The place seemed nice & the staff were friendly.. got the clutch replaced for £220 & everything seems fine now! Apparently it was a bearing.

That the one at the Bottom of grapes hill near halfords? I've used them for a tyre, few issues with it as the rim was rusty around the valve seating, should have charged me every time I went back, 3 times in total, but they were really really helpful :)

Are you out Cotessey / Bowthorpe way then?

Yeah that's the one near grapes hill. At first they said it would cost £320! But then I told them I got a quote for £225 from another garage in norwich (who couldn't fit me in until the new year, I couldn't wait that long!) and they bought the price down to £220.

yeah I'm in costessey, you in norwich as well?
