My Wife's 04 Punto has just suddenly started blowing ridiculously loud - the noise is deafening and sounds like a Spitfire!

We replaced the front section of the exhaust about 3 months back due to corrosion - worked fine since then.

Suddenly today she got about half a mile from our house and this started.

When she pulled over and put it in neutral the revs were peaking to about 2k, then the engine would almost die, then back up - on an endless cycle about once every two seconds.

The noise is so loud it is almost impossible to pinpoint where it is coming from Definitely from within the engine bay rather than further back as with the exhaust - it sounds like from the top of the engine - rather than the base - but given the volume when you go anywhere near it it's almost impossible to determine.

Any initial thoughts/suggestions?

My primary concern is - safe to drive home? About a mile or so.

A Super Loud Blowing Noise again is going to be the exahust system

It could be the Cat has blown a hole on the manifold part = Super loud Noise in a cofined space in the engine bay

the 2k RPM is because the lamba sensor is picking up Way to much oxygen - so its fueling up higher, But because air is creaping in where it should

lots of fuel and lots of air = Rev's increase

Get the Source of the Noise/Leak and report back
My guess is going to be the Mani-cat

Heh - I followed behind with the kids in my car! Hear it myself and concur with what she informed me other than to add noise sounds the same as when the fron of the exhaust blew.

Also the engine management light is flashing - would this stack up with the above analysis?

yes a blowing exhaust will be Picking up way way way to much oxygen

So the ECU is probably putting up a fault Lamba Sensor - To lean error
