hello,
i have punto 2006 ELX automatic.
the red light steering wheel fail is on now.
the power steering is working very good and the CITY mode is working good to.

is it a connection problem?
or a relay problem?

i replaced my battery 3 month ago and everything was ok till now.

please advise.

thank you.

The fault will be the torque/position sensor which is integral in the column, the position element of the sensor that works out how many degrees you have turned the steering wheel can give a faulty signal to the ecu which will bring on the red light without the steering actually failing.
It may go on like this for some time without failing but eventually the steering will begin to cut out.
Unfortunately there is no quick fix for this you will have to change the column to cure the problem.
We offer a reconditioned column and a mail order service or fitting in our workshop, we also offer free fault code reading with our scanner to confirm the fault first.
If you need any help or advice always happy to help regardless of whether you buy anything from us.

It's usually just a battery problem. Why did you replace battery? Maybe alternator is on way out so getting a low charge

believable as well
Happened to me
Battery was Old and in a very bad way for a long while....
battery finally gave up and started to leak - and alternator over worked to keep the power up

New battery in - when demand was up the altnernator kept cutting out for 5 mins and then back in And out

hi guys... thank you 4 answering.
i live in ISRAEL so taking care of this problem will cost many $$ .
but thanks for your offer to scan the code.

i replaced the battery a few month ago because the old one was dead after 4 years.

i bought an Italian battery, not Chinese. and i have warranty for 2 years on it.

if i connect the battery to a parallel battery and start the engine, the problem should go away (if the problem is in the battery ) true??

Ha!! bit of a long way to come for a scan.,

It will not be a battery fault if your steering is still working fine but the red light is on,battery failure will cause the steering to fail and the red light to come on, I guarantee you it will be the sensor.

I hope you are able to find a fix for it, we do export columns so if you can't find a part let me know.

No, if the steering works fine but the light is on then 99% of the time its the battery. Was with mine and all but one other case I've seen

Mine was bit of a mistery it came on but battery and everything was fine but after a while it just went away and has not come back in months.

Also avoid useing city steering this will not help your problem, plus the steering is light enough anyway.
