When is the best time to check to oil in my Punto that i got about 6 weeks ago?

I checked earlier tonight and got nothing on the dipstick. I put a little in and I left it to settle for a while and checked again but still could pick up anything. I dont want to put any more in incase i overfill.

I've read the Haynes manual i have and that says you should check either before driving or at least 5mins after stopping driving (which i've also read on here when i did a quick search)

So when is best to check ??

If nothing is showing up that's quite bad.....

You should notice a change in the oil level almost immediately but expect a slight difference when the oil drops through the engine.

When the oil is new it is very clean on the dipstick and is sometimes difficult to see, but make sure the car is on an even surface and has not been running for at least 5 minutes.

Oh dear. My baby is ill, very ill. :(

Had it into the garage today. AS well as haemoraging oil it is also burning oil like there is no tomorrow.

I've only had the thing for 6 weeks so i've just taken it back to where i got it. Quite surprised that they didnt tell we to feck off to be honest.

Anyway i explained what the garage had told me. Anyway they just said "right then we'll get you a new engine in it" :D which surprised me.

The damn thing only had a new cylinder head gasket 2 weeks after i got it - they did that forfree too.

Only problem is that the garage they use do things at THEIR pace i.e not very fast.

Anyway they lent me a 98 Punto for the time being. (y)
