Hi, got a gearbox problem, I suspect differential bearings collapsing as every time you take the foot off the accelerator it makes a noise like gears rubbing against the casing and a vibration is felt through the gearstick, most similar noise I can think of is if you shove a piece of card thru bicycle spokes and cycle.

Sound goes when depressing the clutch, so sounds like a diff bearing problem.

Is it expensive or a difficult job to do the differential bearings? Any preloads need setting up and shimming? I know on most gearboxes it is a strip down but read somewhere diff is removable? Or is that a different box. Obviously can't drive it around much more without doing serious damage lol

Thanks

Hi, just noticed another thread regarding possible input shaft bearings.. and looked up the rough guide on replacement for the 8v engine presumebly 5 speed gearbox.

is the process similar on the 6 speed?

The differential bearings are always Moving when you move
So when you driving down the Street, and let off the throttle you hear the Noise?
And then when you dip the clutch - while still moving the Noise Disappears?

IF thats the case - its Not the Differential, as dipping the clutch WONT make a difference as the gears will still be turning

When Stationary
If the Clutch is down - the noise goes but returns when clutch is raised
then your looking at possible Clutch Release, Input or Even worse, the Internal bearings are dying badly

When mine became noisey in 1 to 3, if i was stationary, the Tappet noise would appear if clutch raised, but sease when clutch dipped
When driving IN gear, the Noise was ratchety/Grind'y, dipped clutch is Quietened down again, but soon as clutch was about to engaged again, noise was back

We thought Clutch/Input but turned out it was the Internals bearings
so i had the Gearbox Reconditioned, as i've had several 2ndhand boxes and they've all proven to be..... well.... **** to be honest

In my eyes - RECON ALL THE WAY :slayer:

Hi, was just a hunch at first, but then I realised it could be internal bearings or more specifically mainshaft bearings.

I could probably recon the gearbox myself, as I have pullers and dial guages etc.

Problem is, I cant find any information on what preloads and things need to be.

Recon'd 2x Ford Gearboxes previously, but they was easy because I had access to Ford ETIS.

But so far in regards to finding information on the punto gearbox im drawing a blank.

I agree recon is better, than 2nd hand as you dont know the condition and also if they are prone to failing recon will give you a new gearbox... also noticed some suppliers are selling uprated bearings for reliability.

Has anybody on here ever attempted to strip one of these gearboxes?

is there any information on any of the elearn systems for other models that will be applicable? like if the Bravo or something has the same gearbox.

can't comment on gearbox's to be honest except i kept having another 1 put in
Never worked all the way tho :(

AFAIK you will also need a bearing press as some wont come out with a puller, so hydro pressure with a Hydrolic press was only 1 to get some out

Its your call to be honest

The 5-speed is one of the easiest gearboxes to dismantle. Unfortunately I've never done the 6-speed. If you're just changing bearings you don't need any special tools (as long as you've got a hammer and chisel and circlip pliers etc.) The diff is a seperate unit on the 5 speed.

Hi

Hydraulic press is no probem, found several garages around here in the past to be helpfull on that front with wheel bearings and things lol.

although the amount I seem to need one I may well invest in one at some point.

bearings shouldnt be hard to swap over, but it was whether or not I had to setup the preloads that concerned me.

everything else inside the gearbox only really fits together one way lol and as long as you treat it methodically and logically should be no problem generally.

just the settings like preloads which need setting correctly.

Ziggy how much it costs the recondition gearbox with all fittings thx

Hi,

£120 for a recon including fitting etc.

that sounds a bit suspect..

upgrade heavy duty bearing kit is £100 on its own.
then for a proper recon changing the syncros etc... adds up to more like a few hundred.

spent £250 recently recon'ing a Ford gearbox, new syncros, bearings, syncro blockers, syncro springs all round...quite a parts list lol.

The FIAT eLearn stuff doesn't contain any useful info on stripping the boxes.

As I understand it, FIAT keep the in-depth gearbox stuff (and the in-depth engine stuff) seperate from the rest of the manuals.

You might, if you're very lucky, get something from your local FIAT dealership.

its annoying, dont really need any info on stripping the box.

all i need is the procedure and tolerances for shimming correctly.

seeming as people seem to be saying their local garages are reconditioning these gearboxes, I may just strip it, rebuild with new bearings and use existing shims and see how it is.

When i was watching Mark Evans a 4x4 is born, they use the original shims, and test it
If its too noisey they reshim - if there nice they keep doing with them :)

Noo you got wrong end of stick
£250 for Local firm to rebuild
£120 for mechanic to fit refurbished box :)
= £370

lets put it this way - i won't go 2nd hand again :( They are all usually smashed, so rebuild FTW!
