I've got a fiat punto mk2 1.2 8v with a standard blaupunkt system in, I just wanted to know is it worth me taking the system out myself or getting it done from halfords for £24.99 if I buy a system there too (which I don't really want to do)

Just need a decent guide on how to remove the old and insert a new one because it'd save me a bit of cash, but can anyone tell me if it's a big job or not?

Note: Not done this before but i've got a good clue of what's what

its easy mate. it was my 1st time when i did mine too.
what ya do is buy the fascia surround 1st... you can get em cheap on ebay, but better off looking for one that includes the radio aerial adapter and radio removal key.... here is what i mean: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fiat-Punt...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cb8d5c0ca
once ya got them, you use the keys to fit in the 4 holes (2 each side) and push them both in at the same time. they can be stiff, but a small jiggle and some pressure in and you should hear the radio click out. from there you just pull out the radio and disconnect the radio leads.
once ya done that, it does depend on the new head unit, but basically u pop on the fascia adapter, then slot in the HU cage, connect the leads to the HU (should be self explanatory for where they go) and slot in the new HU.
few points to be aware of: some head units need lead adapters, but ya can check this when in halfords and buy if needed. make sure that the cables dont fall down the slot.... wont be too fun trying to recover them from behind the dash. you may not use all of the in-car leads; the stock radio is connected by 3 leads (including radio aerial), but a lot of after market HU use only 2. and when slotting in the HU, it can be frustrating..... the leads can get caught up and stop it from slotting all the way in.... try to feed the wires back to the right hand side as you fit the HU, there isnt much room, but it does fit.
its an act of common sense for the most part to just take your time and dont panic. £25 is a lot of money for something that would take a novice 30 mins start to finish. only you can decide if your confident enough to do it tho.

The cabling adaptor is important because Fiat wiring is not the same as all other makes and you can end up with the stereo never actually turning off which flattens the car battery.

Will the Halfords guy (or any other fast fit outfit) know that? Maybe; but we have so many battery problems posted that end up being badly wired stereos we have to wonder.

i bought the proper iso lead allegedly off a good internet shop that said it would work
it didnt
i had to make one up/might have well done that in the first place but it wasnt my car or new stereo
halfords want fortunes for face plates last time i was in there
i suggest a scrappy, theres usually a plate in there for $2 plus the converter plug for the aerial will most likely be there too
loads a money saved see:D

Cheers for the info, I'm most likely going to find a cheap HU on the internet and fit it, so I'll try to keep away from halfords fitting, unless it's urgent.

Also, when you say 'Stereo never turning off' do you mean when it still stays on when the engine is switched off? My current punto has this problem and you have to turn it off yourself, I'm not too fussed about this because I automatically turn the system off now i'm used to it so I can't see me leaving it on.

If not, how would I make sure it doesn't constantly stay on and is it best to go for a system with the 3 leads to make the wiring process easier?

I'm leaning towards the Mutant bluetooth system, can anyone suggest anything else decent (and not too expensive) possibly bluetooth because the Mutant BT system is the only decent I can find!

Oh I see, i've got my eye on the kenwood kdc bt30 also, but i'm not sure if its compatible with punto mk2 and i'm going to try and fit it myself if it fits, any pointers too look out for not already mentioned?

Right, ive just installed a new cd player to replace the ****ty tape player my girlf has been using for the last 5 years, can you understand the frustration of borrowing her car!. i ripped out the tap unit at xmas and have only just figured out how to get the cd player working without draining the battery. (i dead battery later :( )

I think she has a mk2 punto.. but im no expert on this.
Heres how i did it,
I used a multimeter to find out there was no fookin ignition feed on the hookup. so i took a feed of the cig light and patched it into my the ignition pin on my stereo. my/her stereo had a nice picture on the back showing my what wires did what. I scotch locked a wire from the cig lighter socket. I removed it via a guide on this website (theres big list of guides somewere)

try this
punto-guides/129715-punto-mk2-centre-console-removal-bulb-replacement-3.html

Basically there are 4 four allen key screws that need removing, two either side of the air vents down in the foot well, and two in the little tray thing under the heater controls. that done, i gave it a bit a tug to get it past the gear stick and the panel fell off. Theres a little catch on the plug for the lighter that you press and the wire pops out. i tested them all (using the black ground on the headunit lead) and found the middle wire as the ignition live wire, so i scotch locked another wire to it, fed it through the dash and scotch locked it to the ignition feed into the stereo. And voila! my first successful car hack!
i was new to the old scotch locks, so i bought ten of the fookers for 2 squid off ebay, and i now fooken love them!!

now my problem (and maybe yours) is to get the little door speakers (the other side of the wing mirrors) linked up?? maybe more scotch locking is required.

Thanks for the tips, after PM'ing you I realised it may be easier to do this way:

Just need a bit more help on the above, do both the red and green wires need to be switched on both of ISO connectors?

Or does the greeny blue wire need to be left out?

Or does the greeny blue wire need to be switched with red and problem solved?

Can anyone confirm any of the above!

I'm also guessing the stereo on an 04 punto would be the same as the 51 red punto in the guide?

ive not done this myself... i tryed but couldnt get the damn clip out of the iso socket and didnt wanna break it, but from what i understand, u are just moving the one wire from the HU loom socket into a different pin location. the guide only mentions the moving of that one wire. check against the guide the wire colours/locations on ur HU... should be pretty much the same really and then move that pin if u can pop it out.

Ok thanks for the info, just needed it clearing up, il post some pics of the HU wiring etc ad compare against the guide

Just bought the kenwood kdc bt 30

Photos are below, just need a few answers on the wiring process:

What is the black wire at the back of the HU for? (See 1st photo)
Where does the ariel adapter go on the HU? This came with the fascia cover

Can some one guide me on which of the wires to remove from the HU itself and placing it in another slot to prevent this staying on when the ignition is off, I tried using the guide but I want to make sure it goes in correctly as i'll be doing it myself.

Is there any wires from the standard HU which need to be changed or used at all?

Have not yet removed the standard system, just wanted to make sure that I get the wiring of the new HU correct first then i'll fit it in, i've got everything to fit it just need some answers on the above, cheers

Do any of the wires on the car radio need to be switched?

The guide may not apply to your car. I just replaced the radio on my 04 active, and it only had one connector and no switched 12v at all. The only wires present aside from the speaker wires, were: Ground, Permanent 12v and two thin wires that were probably for providing the CAN bus signal to the factory radio.

When I get a day off, I'm gonna splice a switched 12v from the ciggy lighter. At the moment, I've just got the red wire from the radio pushed under the rubber insulator of the bullet connector going to the yellow wire. It will end in tears though, when I forget to hit the faceplate release and flatten the battery.:)

That black wire that is sitting ontop of the HU, is the ariel cable
Now IIRC, the Punto fits ONTO a Female Connector Stud, not a tube like so
so you will probably need something like this
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/..._productId_225942_langId_-1_categoryId_165626

or this

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/..._-Product_Details_Zone_1-_-Blank&iozone=PDPz1

Without Taking mine apart - which im NOT willing todo as its a Tight fit to get all the cables back in i think you will need the 2nd link, but dont hold me to ransom for that

Ziggy
