Have a strange problem and cant seem to find anything about it anywhere. I have a 1.2 punto elx 8v only had it a few months but this has just started to happen. Sometimes when i change gear (normally going from 2nd to 3rd) it recognises the change but then all of a sudden the revs shoot up as if ive went back down a gear it continues to struggle for about 4 seconds then revs go back down and its normal again. It did it before on a dual carriageway - i was in 5th gear struggling at 65mph with the revs really high then after a few seconds it went back to normal. I dont know whether its something to do with the clutch or the gearbox. There's no noises or grinding that i can hear.
It seems to be if i change gear quick and at highish speeds. If im going really slow and dont ride the gears too much it doesnt do it and if i dont put the clutch right down to the floor it doesnt seem to either.

Please someone help!

riding the gears? you mean slipping the clutch?
or just keeping you foot on the pedal a bit?
all bad:)
this will cause clutch slip and will wear the fingers on the diaphragm
a new 3 piece clutch should be fitted if it is this or the clutch will never be right
dont buy internet rubbish either go for quality

As in accelerating for a bit before moving up a gear - but not so the car is struggling - just the normal amount of acceleration. If i change gear at low revs it seems fine. Was just looking on ebay at 3 piece sets - were around £40 but i guess thats too cheap then.

yes
i assume you will be getting someone to fix the clutch for you and one of those kits will be reconditioned and probably be out of true so you wont be happy
someone on here said eurocarparts budget clutches were good but i havent tried them
thing is if you intend keeping the car a while a quality clutch will pay in the longer term with a nice clean bite a light pedal and longevity

your choice of course:)

Whatever you do, don't get a recon clutch they are ****e. Luckily they're well easy to change on these cars so labour wont be too much

Thanks I won't get a recond one, the ones on ebay were brand new and came with a two year/20,000 mile warrenty but still not sure. Gonna speak to my mechanic after the bank hol.

Thanks again for replies

Just a quick question...

When I now pull away from stop my car shudders really bad and almost stalls, is this due to the clutch as well does anyone know?

ive no idea what mine is... it started off with a slight hesitation to when putting the foot on the accelerator it stalls -,-

i think i might accidently throw a match in the petrol tank

Haha feel like doing the same its just one thing after another with mine :-(

A Slipping Clutch can break down and Break apart
So when you come to bite clutch the car is Biting on a Broken up clutch friction plate and you get this struggling / Juddering sensation

the simple clutch test is
Handbrake on tight
Select 3rd, Try and pull off

if the car die's - the clutch bite is okay
Car struggle for a few seconds - clutch is on way out
car run like no problem = Clutch Dead - Stop running

If the Clutch has completly gone - you will be running against the flywheel - you dont want to be doing that - as then it does get costly!

Ziggy

Wow - exactly what I needed to know thank you. I don't drive it at all now till its fixed but I had to get it home so hope I haven't made it worse :-(

Can I suggest eurocarcare on 01332 345869 rather than eurocarparts? Ask for Big Mick, say the forum sent you and you'll probably get a discount.

Makes sense to support people who run and know FIATs rather than a pan global multi part shop, methinks.

Just seen this! I'll defo give them a ring, thanks very much!
