If the cables and stick can move freely then you have an internal problem. The three bolts do not have to come off to get access to the top of the gearbox which is held by 5 bolts. You will get a better idea of what is causing the resistance by removing the top of the gearbox. The box should have sufficient oil to lubricate the top part of the mechanism. Have you checked you have oil up to the drain plug facing the radiator about half way down the box at the front? However it is hard to imagine you have so little oil it cannot be sprayed upwards to the top selecting mechanism.

Sorry when I say freely, I meant when I disconnected the pair, the stick would go loose but could still be moved side to side and forward back by pulling at the 2 cables.

Haven't checked the oil no, it's currently in the garage for another issue, but depending on the cost of that may mention it to him. Would this not be related to the remote box & shaft then? Had some pics sent from the facebook punto group that show I was probably looking slightly in the wrong place for that anyway! (but not far off) :bang:

We seemed to be talking past each other. The normal spring to neutral is created by the gearbox. The unconnected cables and the stick are correctly loose without being attached to the gearbox. If the stick is loose when disconnected then the stiffness is in the box that the cables connect to.

I am not sure what you mean by remote box.

Also your facebook pictures are very different to my own 2004 punto gearbox
