hi, was told that the rack end is loose and need to replace asap. Is there a need to change the tie rod end togther when replacing the rack end? I guess it requires same amount of work to get it done.

and also, does it required to change both sides (left and right)?

Appreciate your input/advise. Thanks so much!

track rod End i think is what your on about there mate

the track rod been loose is probably more like the track rod has too much play in it or is close to snapping

you'd be getting signs that the car doesn't track or wheel shakes badly at speeds as the wheel isn't held straight

eitherway - replace them yes :)

replace both - I would, that way then you go and get the tracking checked that you know both sides will be good to go a long time again and you will only pay for 1 round of tracking fee's

Ziggy

thanks. in fact i can clearly hear the knocking sound badly from the front when car is moving or turning. other than track/tie rod end, is there a need to replace ball joint or any common parts to look for?

if you have been told its the rack end rather than track rod end then its the ball under the gaiter cover on your rack
remove cover and with a good pair of stilsons undo it and replace, remembering to loctite the thread on replacement in case it undoes itself over time
there is a lazer tool to undo these if you cant get the stilsons in but its around £50 i usually weld an old wheel stud onto the bit that unscrews with my mig welder then undo with a socket and extensions
the ends are about £18 all in each from the factors remember to take track rod ends off or you will struggle once removed from car unless you have a good vice
car will need tracking afterwards also
common problem by the way.....

Thanks. Yes, it was rack end.. but was thinking to replace the track/tie rod end togther since it requires same amount of work to get it done. Since the replacement involve quite many jobs, i'm thinking to get a mechanic to fix it.

I was also thinking of replacing the ball joint or bushes as well, but i'm not sure whether the bush of the arm can be replaced or it has to replace the whole set of arm?

The track rod is on the end of the steering rack. Its cheap and easy to replace.

The other end of that rod is hidden under the rubber boot close to the steering rack body. If that has failed (not a common fault on any car) you will need an new steering rack. It is very rare for these to fail but they are easy to test for free play.

The bottom suspension arm has a ball joint on the wheel end similar to a track rod joint. When that fails you need a new bottom arm. If one has gone due to old age do them both as the other will usually be in a similar state.

rack ends often need replacing on puntos, corsas, fiestas and not always on mileage too
fai do all the range via factor and as i say usually under £20 unless factor greedy

a friend told me the bush can be replaced, it's not neccessary the whole arm. he did replace only the bush for his e36 year ago without replacing the arm. changing the bush is cheaper than the arm. thought?

thanks

When the rubber bushes go use a suitable grade of Polybush. Ball joints need a new part. Rod end = cheap. Bottom arm not cheap.

fai have components made all over the world to their specification so i trust them with life saving components
buying unknown makes off the internet that may well be a poor quality copy is not for me
i sleep well by the way (usually )
it therefore follows to be penny wise and not pound foolish and buy arms from a trusted source
i wouldnt do a bush on these arms because as pointed out the ball joint will be flubbered anyway
