Hi,
I took my Punto in yesterday for its 1st service and had to have the pads and discs replaced at 10000 miles. I'm quite a cautious driver so it seems very strange to me. Before this I had a Bravo for 5 years and used to go much longer without these needing replaced.
I'm really no mechanic but this doesn't seem right and I've read similar previous postings. I feel I should be due some contribution from Fiat and was wondering other people's opinions.
What is the best way to complain? Should I demand some support from the servicer? (my brother got this when his Golf had problems under warranty)

Thanks for your time

Either you brake hard a lot or you have been ripped off from your dealer.

Discs rarely need changing so unless you were driving with no pad these did not need to be changed.

I have heard of many dealerships claiming they need to be done when they dont for example I changed the pads 1 month before taking the car in for a service and they told me they needed to be done, I laughed, told them to double check and guess what, they didn't need changing.

In future whenever your in doubt on if something needs changing always ask for the old parts because if they didn't need changing then you have evidence to complain. But because it is classed as a consumable item, you have no grounds to complain without evidence...

Sorry, but at least you have brakes the work at the end of the day...

Personally I wouldnt pay for them. The law says that any product or it's components should be 'Fit For Purpose'. Discs should last longer than 10,000 miles. End of argument! - Incidentally, My Punto Sporting Mk1 has done 92k and it's still on it's original discs. Admittedly theyre getting a little bit worn now but it does show how long discs can last.

I completely agree with you but it sounds like he has already paid for it.

It is a consumable item "end of arguement" - Incidentally if I was to take a standard car on the track I could wearout the standard brakes in no time at all.

Their arguement is that it will differ from 10k - 90k depending on your style of driving. Its wrong and is 99% of the time a way for the dealership to con money out of you but at the end of the day, completely legal unless you have evidence to show they didn't need changing.

What if the discs were really rusty? Even new cars can get rusty discs if they're not used enough. And they'd want to replace the pads as well if that were the case.

ok beat you all i think??..i have a punto it is 6 months old(1.2 5 door active 5000 miles) and it had to go into the dealer as the brakes were"pulsating" at the front when slowing down to a complete stop and the dealer changed the discs under the warranty they had a small warp in them but they did not ask for any cash as the warranty covers all things under 12 months/12000 miles under the manufacturers warranty then you have a 2 year delaer warranty (what ever that is)..but they changed them without argument to i think they have had a few puntos with the same problem as normaly they have a moan about things like this so it may be down to cheap metal parts...hope you did not pay to get them fixed...i demmand and demmand it works....well most times..lol

my dads focus had to have new disks fitted because of corrision on them, we live by the sea and where he works - the car was parked side facing the sea. The front and rear discs became horribly pitted on that side and needed replacing.

But then if u dont live by the sea, cant see that being the reason!

i ve got an S reg punto 60000 miles. recently checked my pads and there was still at least half of the pad left. they've rammed you! get your cash back!
