ok did the phonic wheel thing and it cleared the eml light, but surely that wont fix this misfire?

Just so you can understand what happend before i had the headgasket done it was misfiring like it is now randomly but quite frequent, but after taking it on a long trip doing about 70mph on the motorway for about 50 miles when i came off the motorway is would just die everytime i stopped and it had no power through any gear breifly then suddenly it would find some power and be ok for a short period and then the same problem would happen all over again.

Im baffled 2bh, could that be down to fuel starvation etc etc?

the lamdas are new so couldnt be them as it was the same with the old sensors!

Also when idling every 30 seconds theres a "tick"....followed by a 2 second pause then another"tick" then there is a noticable drop in the idle note but then is fine again. This noise is coming from what sounds like the engine fusebox any idea what that could be? and is it contributing to my problem?

sounds like same problem i had when you mention the clicking from fuse box and random power loss...

check all your earths...clean both and make sure that they are tight not able to move by hand even with force...i did clutch on mine and the gearbox earth stood had come loose...the earth still making contact to the gearbox but the loose stood was enough to cause me engine to misfire and cut out on idle...also a lot of clicking from a relay in fuesbox because of this

check the throttle earth and the gearbox earth also battery earth

what i did was tighten a nut onto the stood to keep ti tight in gearbox then earth cable over the nut and other nut so it was wedged tight

Dont assume the garage will be any better. Intermittent faults are always bar stewards to fix.

Clean the main battery earth contacts all the way down to the engine. Also look at the ECU, the HGT has a separate little earth tag. I dont know if the 1200s also have one, but if that's loose there will be problems.

Right im still having issues with this problem, ive been looking through other threads and people seem to be solving their problems and yet mine persists.

I took it from Birmingham to Luton yesterday and it was fine the entire way until about 1/2 a mile away from my destination.

it again started misfiring and would clear if i put my foot down, i tried down gearing etc and was misfiring in the same way until evetually it came to a complete stop and the engine died, it wouldnt start dtriaght away again i had to wait a minute or 2 and when it started it ran awful asif on 2/3 cylinders.

When i pulled up to where i was going it died, and wouldnt start again straight away and ran on 2/3 cylinders.

Like i said i have changed everything electrical, plugs, leads, coils, lamdas, ecu and also the cat and the headgasket has been done.

The compression in the cylinders seems fine and even when it misfired there was no eml light left on.

Completely baffled by this now, any ideas?

i dont think i would benifit from getting that, it was sat on a diagnostic machine for 6 hours the other day and showed no sign of any faults yet it was still misfiring, hence why im so baffled with it!

have u tryed the back box this was happening 2 mean the other day black hair coming out the back but that only lasted until it all came out and 2nd my air filter box the air flow was restricted if u have a k&n this is very likey as it happened 2 another car i had witch took 2 weeks b4 i figer it out but can still happen if not got 1 jus look 4 blockages mayby a new 1 or filter the old breather pipe went 4 me this time

the backbox will have nothing to do with it mate, it would have been your blocked filter etc

the only thing i can think of trying is getting a new inlet with injectors and a fuel pump perhaps.

but i dunno if this will fix it, bit of wishful thinking maybe?

Check very carefully the trigger leads to both coils. The only thing left to change is the crank sensor. They can sometimes play up intermittently, though that's usually a full stop but for what they cost perhaps worth a try.

Does the ECU have a separate earth tag that's been left loose? While on that subject check the battery earth is all clean and solid.

which senseor is the crank sensor?
is it the one that runs down the cam cover ?

Is there any other things that can cause this intermittent missfire, like i said before it just dies when i exit the motorway after a long drive!
its very strange!

Crank sensor is on the end of the engine under the cam belt crankshaft pulley. They can fail when hot but seem ok when cold or just warm.
