Right the car is due for a good oil Change again - tappets are noisey and its black

So start with Flushing
I've been using Stuff From Asda in a Bottle - added it - run engine - Dumped oil
And replaced all the bits

i've also done a Dump - Fill with cheap + Flush - Run engine - Dumped - Replaced all the bits

Question is - it still goes black quiet quickly
So either its a dirty Oil Maker - OR its Got lots of Trapped Dirty oil

so would putting a Flush in - Running Engine - Dumping - Cheap oil + cleaner in - run Engine - Dump - replace all the Bits be a better Job - or a waste of time?

Probably will do the Cheap Oil dump again but is it worth 2x cleaners put through :)
Also What Flush would people recommend? - Halfords do a Wymns for a £5er i think - is it any good?

And Additives - to go such as this?
Its cheap - and i'm practically at 100k :)
But a seal Swelling Additive - don't sound a good thing Surly?

My personal preferance for cleaning an engine out is to do regular oil and filter changes (approx 1K miles) using oil for a diesel engine, it has more detergents in it than normal and won't do any harm.

Seal swelling additives do exactly that, it will make all the rubber oil seals swell which can stop small leaks, but they are not a long term solution as they make crank and cam seals press harder against the spinning shaft.

Punto 1.2 8V does not have hydraulic lifters so an oil change will not make them quieter if they are noisy. I think they may require adjustment to reduce noise.

yea they are - they have Hydrolic Tappets that aren't adjustable easily :(
Its only do able with having them Re-shimmed

And Yes A oil Change DOES make then quieter
its like low oil Pressure and Low Oil Make then more noisey too

The cars has to be happy with its oil

8V does not have hydraulic tappets, this is why they have shims. Hydraulic tappets do not need shims. If you remove one you will see. They look like hydraulic tappets but there is no oil going in them as they are hallow underneath. The oil is getting on them so that there is lubrication between the tappet and the cam. You will need to re-shim them correctly to get rid of the tappety noise.

As said, the 8v engine doees not have hydraulic tappets. You need to check the clearances and re-shim as necessary.

Deisel oil is good for flushing only, as it contains more detergent. Or just use the cheapest oil you can find. And change the filter.

If the engine is fuming from the brearther, forget all that and find a low mileage engine -- the rings will be shot.

Sometimes I top up with diesel oil for the bit of detergent. Not sure if it makes much of a difference these days. Seems within grade more and more syn and semisyn oils are for petrol and diesel. Changing the sump made a difference. The oil stays much cleaner. Probably cost no more than cleaner , flusher , lather rinse repeat as well.

Diesels produce more particulates so the oil is has more stuff to keep them suspended. It will be fine in a petrol engine and TBH I use it it mine as I believe it keeps the engine cleaner. But. its not good to put petrol oil into a diesel.

I use:
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/..._productId_157187_langId_-1_categoryId_165750

Used it in my mk1 for second oil change after doing the HG, left it in untill car up to temp, then 15 mins fast idle, dump the oil,

The new oil in the car has lasted 1.2k miles and looks NEW:eek:(y)
Sadly the same can't be said for our mk2/b, the oil goes black quickly also(n) (~200 miles) - not pitch black, but a dark gold/black(n)

Both cars are 8v, mk1 - 1.1L mk2/b - 1.2L both less than 65k miles
mk1 has 10k less than the mk2/b if it matters(y)
