Hi,

whenever i fill up at the petrol station, it starts to leak out after about 10 seconds after filling. i never overfill just wait for the pump to stop when it knows it full and take it out.

after paying for it get back in the car and it smells of petrol straight away. i know it has a reserve tank and maybe it's just releasing a bit of pressure. but it shouldnt be happening every single time.

anyone have any ideas what it could be please?

Cheers

Chris

Get under the car on the RHS and make sure the breather and filler pipes are 100% ok. BTW fumes are toxic as well as flammable.

the Fuel smell is never a good sign

Make sure the Breather Pipe isn't blocked - as thats what vents the tank

And the reserve is built into the tank - you dont have a seperate Tank for the reserve

Had similar issues.. Use to get some petrol drip by the filler under the car..

Also had petrol smell inside car.

Checked over and the breather pipe has rubbed agaisnt the filler tube causing a small hole.

Apparently its common and known the fiat so check the breather pipe over for holes or simply remove it and submurge in water.

Be careful though it carrys petrol vapours which are the most flammable part of petrol.

i have a similar problem, how much fuel was dripping out of yours because it looks like a lot comes out of mine, i've looked under the car it seems to be the pipe from the filler cap to the tank? is this the same problem or is a new piece of pipe needed?

i don't brim it is the thing, i fill it a bit at a time when i have some cash, like £10-£20 at a time, but still some of it runs straight out of the pipe onto the floor, any suggestions?

are you putting the nozzle in right?
puntos are a pain to fill and i tend to only just put the nozzle in so as to speed things up and have caused a very expensive puddle before now

this is likely to be a corroded leaking fuel filter; situated underneath just in front of the driver's side rear wheel; easy to replace (pull off connectors) once you have cleaned the road muck off..

1)check you fuel pump cover(it's under your back bench)- mines not tighten and it leak out once .

2)Fuel tank leak somewhere , most probably the fuel pipe area .

Sorry for the bump, but:

Filled my MK1 up Saturday, but not so the pump cut out. Since done over 40 miles, yet it appears to be leaking fuel from the largest pipe in the o/s/r wheel arch.

It's not a constant leak, but enough to be a worry.

I'm abit baffled as to why there's still fuel there?

I had something like this on a scenic (non fiat) turned out to be the locking ring on the sender unit under the back seat. It had bust and when I filled up - up came the sender unit.

Culminated in overflowing when I filled it completely up, pushed sender unit up so far that by the time I had managed to get to it to push it back (after clearing the forecourt and ruining my shoes) the tank had warped.

Cost me a new tank & new locking ring.

I'm gonna assume you've checked the fuel cap is on properly and not cross threaded or loose.
If its leaking fuel in this area then the filling assembly is leaking and there are a number of seals and components to check. Clean everything up with a cloth take it for a short drive and see if you can see where the leak is coming from. Park over some card to catch the drips to see where the drips are coming from as the fuel will evaporate quickly off Tarmac.
