Hi everyone.

Could somebody please help me:confused:

i have a mk2 elx and there is a banging noise coming from the back of the car on the passenger side
I thought i could only hear it going over ramps and bumps but i heard it again while parked up .
I had the wheel and drum off on Saturday, giving them a clean as the brakes were abit squeeky and had a good look around the shock and bushes to see if i could see anythin but had no joy:bang: everythin was all nice and tight.
I put the wheel bakc on and checked for play at 6-12 ,3-9,2-7,10-4 lol..I checked every angle and didn`t find any play.

It`s a hollow sound.Like the exhaust hitting the beam but i had a look at the exhaust ,gave it a good shake and cant see it hitting anything.
Its more a hollow vibrating noise while stationary.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Alan

Probably the exhaust pipe hanger peg moving across and hitting the bodywork. Get 2 x 10mm worm drive hose clips. Put them on the hanger pegs to stop the rubber hanger sliding over.

Also check a hand brake cable is not rubbing on the tyre. Strap it down with a zippy cable tie but not too tight or the cable outer sleeve will crack.

now that you say it,the rubber exhaust mount is cracked on one side and the exhaust looked abit close to the bumper..but when i was rocking the car from side to side i couldn`t see it banging

all brake lines seem good too.

i might just buy the rubber mount for a couple of € tomorrow and see if it does anything .

I had the same issue as this, on mine it was the rear silencer was rattling of the back axle, trip to the garage, and after loosening the hangers, bending the pipe up towards the chassis by a couple of inches, then re tightening everything to make sure it stayed in place, The noise is gone, even with 5 people, luggage and speedbumps.

Have a look at the rear axle under the exhaust, if there is any marks near the pipe or silencer, then that is most likely the issue.

Hope that helps :)

Could be the axle thing some do hang too low.

On mine it all looked fine even going underneath while someone revved the engine. But, I noticed the pipe moved towards off-side a little so I put on the worm clips so the rubber could not slip too far along the hanger pins. 50p & a few mins with a screwdriver was worth a try. The noise stopped.

im going to buy a new mount and 2 screw clamps tomorrow(y)

cheers

Well ,i replaced the rubber today(got 3 from the scrappy with hanger brackets for €2 lol)..
Brought it for a spin to see if it done the job.The noise was still there:mad:
so took it home for futher investigation and found the real culprit..

The pipe coming from the front of the exhaust box(the one that goes over the rear axle) had corroded right thru and was hanging out of the box:eek:

So off to the scrappy again as i knew there was at least 3 mk2 Punto`s with near new exhausts and got one with a brand new clamp for €30
jackpot:D

I went to take my busted exhaust off and when i opened the clamps and gave the box a pull the box came away in my hand leaving the pipe:eek:

So after a half an hour with a hammer and chissel i finnally got the pipe off:D
put the new one on and noise gone ,everything nice and tight..

strange thing was, the banjo`d exhaust was still very quite even with a gaping hole in it ha..

anyway i just thought i`d post it up just in case anyone else has the same problem.might be something else to look out for:D

cheers for the help lads

Alan
