1.4 Grande Punto Engine in a MK2B

So I have a MK2B 1.4 Sporting, and was wondering if (hypothetically, of course) if the 1.4 engine from a Grande Punto would fit like for like in.

Ideally the 1.4 16V T-Jet engine from the Abarth GP 'SS' model giving 178bhp

I have no doubt that the cost of one would be very high, but just wondering if it is even worth considering.

And no, it won't cost any more on insurance to do it.

Cheers,
Chris

Re: 1.4 Grande Punto Engine in a MK2B

Not with the standard 5 speed gearbox
will need to consider a different gearbox like the 6 speed
OR the Stilo's box which sum1 said a short while ago would fit

And wont the mk2b use a different ECU to the GP?
That'll be the main problem i think to be honest

1.4 sporting already has a 6speed

Hmm, yeah, replacing ecu is a complete pain in the arse, but would a remap suffice? Or not?

Re: 1.4 Grande Punto Engine in a MK2B

thing is - getting the engine to work on the Mk2b ECU might be hard and expensive
And might not work at all
After all they could be 2 different systems

Putting a GP system in a mk2b = Bonkers and not worth doing when the mk2b system is surfice

see if the mk2b ecu will be happy with a GP engine

Mind you tho - there is a 1.4 16v mk2b i believe - not sure what type or if its the same engine or not

It was just an idea, albeit a mad one

Yeah it's the 1.4 16v engine that I currently have in my mk2b sporting! But it's only 90something bhp! The Abarth SS gets 178 out of the same size engine, that's all. Plus converting an engine to house a turbo is not worth doing, hence why I thought of straight swapping it!

Cheers

1.4l - 16v mk2b = 95bhp

See if the ECu's are the same or not
and weather or not it'll accept the GP engine

That's the sporting - has 6 speed instead of 5.

Will do, thanks for the advice

Re: 1.4 Grande Punto Engine in a MK2B

It would have to be engine and gearbox.

It might be the same block but it won be the same engine. Apart from the turbo, everything inside will be different. The electronics will be the kicker. It might need the whole set and loom from the Grande.

Personally, I would rather have the Grande Punto with 178 engine than the bodged (oops) souped up Mk2.

PuntoSales has by far the best option for top performance from a Mk2.

And he had very deep pockets when he started that job.

Re: 1.4 Grande Punto Engine in a MK2B

Hilarious I read this whole thread and thought "what kind of crackpot would actually go through with this, just to obliterate those chavs at the lights", then I see "mrChris"

OF COURSE

Very good idea, but would be so expensive, you'd essentially be dropping the contents, bar interior, of under the bonnet of a 1.4 GP into a different shell, would be just as easy as doing it with any other shell i.e. very hard!

But if you did it... it would be amazing :P

The Sporting 1.4 makes about 90bhp and has no turbo. The Original Post was about the 1.4 Turbo used in the latest Grande Punto.

IMHO the only way to go for ultimate power in a small car is a large bike engine, but it wont be civilised evem slightly. The bike will probably be comfortable than the heavily modded car. And cost is huge - a brand new Grande Punto Multiair turbo is probably cheaper.

Re: 1.4 Grande Punto Engine in a MK2B

Not ridiculously stupid just very much not financially viable.

For some thing way out with style get a Lancia Stratos replica. Total cost about 20K but a genuine Stratos is from 200K and the replica is actually better than the original. I often get flamed for mentioning Lancia on the Punto section but some folks forget (or dont know) the Stratos was a Fiat parts bin special.

Just avoid the super fat tyre version. That was designed for sticky race slicks & would be a nightmare on the road with no grip.

Re: 1.4 Grande Punto Engine in a MK2B

Fiat bought controlling interests in Lancia and Ferrari in 1969. But they allowed Lancia to operate separately but have access to Fiats capital and parts. They bought Alfa Romeo in 1986.

Lancia was the nutter manufacturer great ideas but as a result tended to break all too easily so they struggled. But they have been brought back as the executive brand though for a long while were pretty much a badge product.

PS the typewriter company mentioned is Olivetti.
