I was talking to a lad i know thats a mechanic and he was saying to me the 6 speed gearboxes give trouble, he said something about a bracket being part of the gearbox that is commonly known for breaking on them and he said because its part of the gearbox you either have to weld it (which won't last long) or get a new gearbox, can anybody shed some light on this and tell me is there way to prevent it from happening or is it just going to happen at some stage and i'll just have to deal with it?

Does anyone know anything about this?

By the way, welding would be fine if done with TIG. The big snag would be getting it aligned properly. It could also be done with Lumiweld but the alignment would be an even bigger issue. Weld strength is not the problem.

No common problem that I know of. The main casing and outer selector mechanism and mounts are shared with the 5 speed from what I remember. All they do is stick an enlarged 5th gear housing on the end to squeeze in the 6th ratio and change the internals to suit.

I have one fitted to my Bravo :D no problems, beware if an enthusiastic driver had the car before you 2nd syncro will be a bit weak, otherwise Ive had no problems over the last 2 years, just change the oil when it needs changing, no abusive gearchanges and it will work without problems (y)
Are the syncros for second gear cheap to fix if they do give trouble at some stage?

Generally not a cheap fix as theres alot of work involved in taking a box to pieces, not to mention the complexity of certain boxes and way theyre put together. Did you change the oil in it?
Theres no problems with mine at the moment, i've had the car a week, i just wanted some info on the 6 speed box cos i've had a few people tell me they're weak and don't be surprised if i have to get some work done on it at some stage, i'm planning on doing the timing belt and water pump in a couple of weeks and while i'm at it i'm going to do an oil change on the gearbox just to be on the safe side

Well thats 2 years ive had the box and apart from 2nd being slightly iffy im well impressed with it as its in a heavier car :) is there much else to do with the car?
Well not much else to do cos its a fairly clean car, i'm just going to do the thermostat aswell while i'm doing the other work to it, i just want to make sure its reliable cos i'm using it as a run around for getting to work and all because my jap import i normally drive is costing me a fortune

Dont forget to check the hoses for pinhole leaks, they do perish with age... Dont be surprised if the car runs better if the thermostat is changed, its often never changed... My Sporting was a reliable car after Id finished with it, it served me well through the winter months :)

I feel your pain at not being able to have funds for another car (n)
