My 2001 MK2 punto's airbag warning light came on today, had a few problems with warning lights in the past, turning the ignition on and off have normally sorted them! this ones sticks on, any ideas?

its possible if you have a spare airbag senser (the bit on the tunnel) to swap for a known good one if you dont have access to something like the map by sykes to code read and clear

be aware the senser numbers must match and battery must be disconnected beforehand first

im sure i did this with my first punto mk2 but happy to be told im wrong if it doesnt work as i had borrowed a code reader at the time that wouldnt put the light out,so it might have been wishfull thinking

Check out this guide if you want to have a go at reading the codes yourself.

A common problem is the bit of the loom that goes to the switch to inhibit the passenger airbag. I fixed mine by stripping down and cleaning connectors and contacts.

Others may advise a dealer fitted replacement loom. You need to decide how important it is to you to have a working system. Personally, I fixed it to get rid of the irritation of the warning lamp rather than covering off the low probablity that I would need the airbag to deploy one day. I have studied risk assessment - you multiply the chance of an incident by the consequences. The chance of incident depends on what sort of driver you are, how mant miles you drive, what sort of roads you use, what speeds you travel at, etc. The consequence? Maybe you'll die. I still figured the overall risk value as very low. I left it for over a year before getting round to fixing it.

Bottom line: Your decide.

After my experience with main dealers (Fiat and VW) I prefer to find out myself what is going on. To be told a steering column is shot after 5 minutes with a laptop is not good enough (Fiat). To be told an EGR valve has failed when it was actually a blown turbo hose (VW) does not raise my confidence in them either finding the actual fault or fixing it properly. And - neither of them cancelled the fault codes - "thats extra sir".

Re: Amber Baby Seat warning light MK2 punto

Hi all - just a quick question - i have a 2002 mk2 punto and after changing the gearbox and ensuring there were no faults before hand i now have this orange seat light with what looks like a baby seat on??

Tried clearing the light but no joy??

Can anybody Help please :bang:

Passenger air bag is turned off? Check the end of the dashboard on the passenger side and you should see a key hole, put your key in there and turn it to on and it should go away. If its already turned on and the light is still there, then its probably a wiring fault and IIRC the air bag wires are under the passenger seat (someone correct me if im wrong) so check for any breakages or frayed wires under there

Re: Amber Baby Seat warning light MK2 punto

The air bag system wires are yellow under the seats and behind the glove box. Disconnect battery 30 mins before touching anything. Unplug the connectors, clean contacts and replug. Reconnect battery and see if the error light goes out.

The baby seat light is as post #8. Turn the switch on at the switch on the passenger side dash. Read the user manual.

Re: Amber Baby Seat warning light MK2 punto

quite strange, was changing dashboard light bulbs, made a short circuit, changed 7,5 fuse, was moving seats back and forth and now suddenly airbag light is on with the passenger airbag light blinking, lets see if unplugging battery will solve this

how many air bags does your punto have,
1 2 3 or more,

if more than 2 look underseats and see if there are wires with plugs on.
its more than likey just airbag ecu got spiked or lost power.
this in most cases locks the ecu up so you need to clear it with laptop and MES

or just grab another ecu that is a match off breaker car and swap it over,

you shouid always take a lead off battery when playing with electrics, :)

Re: Amber Baby Seat warning light MK2 punto

i think it only has 2 airbags, if i remove airbag fuse, lights go out ofcourse but that doesnt seem to clear it, i got another airbag ecu from same model, so its just plug and play?

disconnecting battery didnt do anything

its 50/50

sometimes ecu swap is just plug and play
just depends if theres a fault there or not..worth a try, (y)

Re: Amber Baby Seat warning light MK2 punto

even if i turn off passenger airbag with a key, light is still blinking, another mystery unfolds upon us, how did the shortage of dashboard light bulbs confused airbag ecu, maybe if i just unplug airbag ecu fault will get cleared perhaps?

do i rly have to wait some time after disconnecting battery to unplug airbag ecu

for your own safety..idealy yes,

(even if i turn off passenger airbag with a key, light is still blinking)

it will do ..until its cleared of error's.

everything is interlinked on mk2a punto so a short on dashclocks feeds back

sometimes BCU can be weakest link.. so next time before playing with electrics..take lead off battery. ;)

Re: Amber Baby Seat warning light MK2 punto

changing airbag ecu cleared the fault, and i dont believe that stuff about waiting after disconnecting battery to unplug airbag ecu, no power to airbags = no explosion

there is no difference between ecus only by the bottom numbers

left one was the one with the fault
