Mine was like that 10:1 its the clutch.

Unless you know its history you will also need to change the cam belt. 40,000 or 4 years and dont even think about going above either. Its basically the Alfa 1.8TS engine. When cam belts fail they can take out a big end or even damage the crank.

If its a bit diesel sounding especially on startup the variator is probably failing. Fix that with the cam belt. It should sound like a sewing machine.

Ok thank you are the clutch and variator expensive to replace?

DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR.

Seriously no kidding. Mine had 67K, I ordered the parts and went off to use it for a week. The cam belt failed on Tuesday morning and took out all 8 exhaust valves. The crank was OK.

Cam belt & variator about £200 for parts plus at least same again for labour - access is very tight and the job demands special cam locking blocks. But if the belt fails (assuming the crank is ok) you can double that. Valves are about £20 each and the head gasket £50 with another £50 for head bolts.

Dont ever let it freeze or run low on coolant and never trust an unknown cam belt.

Clutch kit is about £80 plus £120 to £150 to have it fitted. £35 for a slave cylinder if its needed.

Parts costs are reasonable (as it goes for the HGT) from www.Shop4Parts.co.uk

Thanks for the Information its greatly appreciated, I can luckily get most parts at trade prices, certainly less then retail and have someone fit them if I am unable to do the job myself, Sh'e low on oil so that my 1st port of call before anything else and of course the cambelt kit will be ordered tomorrow and fitted as soon as it arrives (wont drive car in the meantime)

Will get him to look into the gearbox/clutch issue at the same time and determine what the problem is and then have that fixed

theres a thread in the ICE section that will help you with the stereo code

Thanks for the info will post my serial in there soon to see if I can get a code

I wrote a procedure posted around November 2009. It should turn up with a Google or FF search.

It may be worth dropping the sump to check the cylinder bores. Should be easier than taking the head off.

No worries I got stitched up with mine. So learned a lot very quickly.

Its since had battery, brakes (full set) + 1 caliper, wiper links, 2 rear wheel bearings radiator and steering clockspring. Not much else to go wrong but now thinking of selling as need more space.
