From your description, I suspect he was trying to red-line it in each gear, which is not the way to drive a diesel to get best performance (or get anywhere near the 0-60 time of 12.2 secs.).
Best was is to change-up in the JTD is at 3-3500rpm and surf the torque. If you change-up at 4500rpm all you get is noise, smoke and no action.
Having driven a Stilo 1.6 shortly before I got the Punto JTD (I would assume the 1.6 Stilo is quicker than the 1.2 Stilo
), the Stilo felt like a slug, only really beginning to feel alive at 90-odd mph. In comparrison the Punto JTD feels electric!
When I had a Punto 1.2 8v courtesy car a while ago I mentioned to the service receptionist that it was painfully slow and his answer was 'Try the Stilo 1.2, it makes the Punto 8v feel quick'.
Diesels need to be driven properly to get the best performance from them, which is not red-line-exhaust-smoke style...
A while ago, by driving properly I managed to keep-up with a Skoda Fabia vRS with the 130bhp 1.9TDI engine because he was clearly red-lining it all the time. If it was being driven properly I would have been left for dead (I wasn't trying to race, I jusy wanted to see how much quicker he was than me and he took it as a race
)
As much as the Stilo 1.2 16v is a nice car, it will get nowhere near a well driven JTD Punto (and that, my friend, is a fact...)
