Hi I need help I've just changed my engine over from another punto because mine had gone. I just used the wiring off the new engine and plugged it in and put everything back the way it was. Now when I try starting the engine, it turns over but just chugs and won't start. Now I know the engine started in the other car before I took it out it just won't start in mine, could anyone help

Also my cat has two lambadas but this loom only has 1 connector

u need ur old ecu of the engine u took out as its linked to the immobiliser & key.

also, check that the crank sensor is in fully, shud be about <4mm gap, if its too big od a gap it cant pick up the signal.

also check ht leads are on in correct order

It's same engine 1.2 8v mk2 come from the same age car which I still have. When I turn the key the code light comes on does this mean I need to swap the ecu over and ignition key which I also have

If you're still using your original key and lockset, you need to use your original body computer and the original engine ECU to run.

New engine (and loom) is an early Euro 2 spec then, whereas your original engine was Euro 3. This means the new engine won't have the cam sensor, or the post-cat lambda, which your original ECU will forever flag as an error. Need to refit your original loom and cam cover, and swap the cam pulley for your original. Bottom pulleys may differ also (whether the crank sensor reads off the back or front of the pulley).

Will it still start though if I don't do this or will I have to change it to get it to start

Engine ECU is only two bolts (I'm assuming you haven't swapped the body computer and locks). 5 mins tops and it should run, albeit with error codes relating to the cam and lambda sensors.

So I need to take the ecu and key off the donor car and put them on my car or just put the original ecu on and have errors if so how do I do this

no, u jus need the engine ecu of the engine that came out of ur car. its only held in with 2bolts, jus change it over and should fire up.

as for extra lambda sensor, could u take old exhaust manicat off and use it?, then ud have be able 2 put other sensor in...

You need the matched set of
  • engine ECU
  • body computer
  • ignition key transponder.
If the engine wont work with the car's original ECU you will need the full set from the donor car
You dont need the ignition lock just the transponder that can be swapped over in the plastic key body.

Having the donor engine ECU on the car will not be any use as the donor engine ECU keycode will not match the original car's body computer and key- hence the keycode problem. If he's using the original key, it needs the original Body Computer (which he shouldn't have touched), and the original engine ECU.

He may already be using the original maniverter. The main issue is that he has used the donor engine harness which does not have the post-cat lambda sensor wiring in it, or provision for the cam sensor.

Well I've changed the ecu and the code light has gone out and it started for a few seconds then cut out when I reved it, now it's just doing the same and chugging so I'm thinking I could need fuel even though it had some in before engine went. Ive been told fuel can evaporate and it's sitting been there a couple of months so il try that and see what happens.

dont rev it too hard tho....

it will take a while for it to start, as ive found out from my own engine change last week. thankfully ive a push to start button installed so didnt have to constantly turn key back off if it did cut out.

get some petrol in it, then try again, just give it a bit of throttle (not over 2000rpm) til it gets goin then it should settle down to an even idle speed.

make sure you have coolant and u've bled it correctly

Unplug the fuel pipe from injection rail and connect via hose to a fuel can. See if fuel is flowing fast when cranking engine. Also look into throttle body to see if throttle is opening.
