I studied in Edinburgh and have a Punto here.
Its happened before that the battery goes dead over the christmas visit back to Portugal. I charged it and problem solved.

This time I was away for about 6 months, because it was cheaper to be in Portugal while I waited for the viva or a job. I still had the car at the care of a female friend of mine (which happens to have no inclination for mechanics).

I told her she could run the car to keep the battery up, since removing it to charge up (I have cables and charger) was too much for her.
There was a 2 weeks period without the car being run and the battery died.
This was like a month ago. I'm now back in Edinburgh and I tried to charge the battery, but after a few seconds, the charger lights up the "full charge" light.
Nothing works in the car, no dashboard, lights, not even a hum comes from the motor.
The battery is fairly new, was it too much for it and its really dead or could it be something else?

Regards.

The battery is little more than a year old... :bang:

Anyway, Kwik-fit seem the cheapest at £72, anyone knows where I can find cheaper in Edinburgh?

Batteries use lead sulphate as the charge holding chemical. But when they are not used develop a hard sulphate that wont change state. The battery is dead and will have to be replaced. They must be charged and discharged constantly or they will effectively clog up.

To be honest unless it was connected to a special long term charger like an Optimate no battery would have survived unused for so long. Even running the car might not be enough.

Get a reasonable spec battery and an optimate for next time.
