Well basically I've been having misfires for a while now and its starting to annoy me. it first started when I charged my old battery that kept dying because i couldn't afford a new one at the time but I have now. It would run really rough and have no power at all so I thought it was probably the HT leads, plugs or coil but the leads were changed a year ago and are in good condition and the spark plugs were changed last service and I don't do that many miles in it. Its running a lot better now that the weather has cleared up a lot and I gave it a good run last night and it felt pretty much normal again but I've just been to fill up my car and it was fine on the way back but on the way back it lacked power again and it was revving but just not going very fast for the revs it was showing. does anyone have any ideas what it could be and please don't just say you need to get the codes read because I know I do I just cannot afford it at the moment and I just want to know what it could be so I can get a quote before I take it down to the mechanic.
sorry for the long post by the way

Andy what year and model is your car? I have found that it is mostly 16v's that suffer badly with leads and coil pack problems, that s just from my own experience...

have u tried getting fiatecuscan and connecting it to a laptop? cheaper than code reads and u can do it whenever u want.
i may be waaaay off cos im as much a mechanical novice as u, probably more so, but high revs without the speed to match.... have u considered the fact it could be the clutch slipping?

EDIT: lol, rallycinq beat me to it on the clutch thing. never mind. lol

Yeah its a 2002 1.2 16v sporting and thats what i was thinking but im just not sure yet

If the revs rise and the car goes no faster, its clutch time.

Cheers

I was hoping you wouldnt say that. Would that bring the EML on?

Not yet but im gonna buy one asap to have a look and see what the codes are saying too me

Also thanks for the replys guys (y)

clutch = No EML light

But i agree - if you say put the car in 4th and do 30mph, and put accelerator flat to floor, if the engine starts to rev and the speed doesn't increase
its a sign clutch has died, its wear and tear, dont skimp replace it all, enjoy not really having to worry about it :)

Other thing for Revs slipping up is Gearbox is leaking oil onto clutch

Mis-firing tho will bring on the EML
The usual coil - Ht - Spark's test/replace as required, if not i'd be looking at ECU time :(

If im doing 30 in 4th if i take my foot off the accelerator then it judders really bad and the revs dont go really high it just seems like its not quite going fast enough and sometimes the revs go up and like blip back down then go back up and it sets off like s**t off a stick. Another thing is i can pretty much stall the car just by pressing the accelerator on and off when sat still in neutral. So thats why i was thinking it might be something to do with fuel but im no mechanic. If i got a cable and read the ecu myself, would it tell me exactly whats making it misfire or would it just say misfire?

Right - If the car is stuttering and Jerking before clearing and then taking off its more ignition Related - its misfiring, it clears and ignities properly and off you go

With the engine No struggling (ie no mis-firing) Sit with the car on the flat ground - not on a hill
Put the handbrake on tight as you car
Put the car into 3rd, and lift the clutch up (no rev's just clutch)

IF the Car continues to run = Clutch Dead
car Trys to run - stutters/splutters then dies = clutch very low - still needs to be replaced
Car dies straight away = clutch okay :)

i'd be worried about your cat tho - its been misfiring for a while now yes? and when it misfires it puts petrol straight into the cat - cats dont like petrol it kills them

So you will need to get it sorted soon :)
