Our car is a 2004 '54' Punto 1.2 16v Active Sport. It has been lying since October unused and today I went to start it for the first time in months. The battery was flat, so I jump started it from my other car but now the Power Steering Light is shining red on the dash. The steering still works perfectly.

How do I solve this problem?

pas is electric so normally the warning light is associated with a dodgy battery. just cos its been charged, doesnt mean its all good. best bet is to take it for a good long drive so the alternator can do its work. if that dont work, maybe either get the battery stress tested or replaced. if that dont work then could be an issue with the steering column or motor. rule out the battery 1st tho as a new colomn isnt cheap.

Thanks for the very quick reply. Should the warning light go out once the battery is charged? I have had it on charge for 4 hours now but it is still not fully charged.

maybe. cant say it will for sure, but its the most common fault. as i said, get the battery stress tested or even try borrowing a battery from someone to see if the light goes out. if it does, buy a new battery. 1st thing to do is have a long drive tho to make sure the battery is fully charged. the battery cells can die from long periods of sitting there unused. same applies to old batteries, especially in this cold weather. pas uses a fair bit of power so is often the 1st thing to flash up when the battery is in need of replacing etc.

Fixed. Thanks for your help. 5.5 hours to charge the battery back to full. Removed charger and started the car. Power steering light went out. All working fine now. Thanks again.
