Hi,

2001 8V 1.2 belonging to a friend. Oil leaking from coil end of cam cover (so much so that level was not registering on the dip stick). Also very slow to fill oil (I insisted on providing a topup). Advised owner to get a new gasket (which I will fit) but should I be looking for a blocked breather and if so, where is it? (I know where the pipes below the air filter are but need to check whether there's another one I didn't know about).

Breather is on the left of the rocker cover that feeds into the air box.
No reason to suggest it is blocked but an oil leak from the coil side is most likely the 'o' seal behind the coil pack

Cheers mate. It was so slow to fill that unless I reduced my pouring to a drip it was filling the filller hole to the brim - any ideas on that? There's no evidence of mayo but I'll whip the cover off next time it's at my house.

Is the O seal easy to do? Can't think what's on the end of the cam.

Very easy. 3 bolts i think on the coil pack. New ring seal round it and slot back in. Done.

That is odd but if anything that would be blocked oil passages between the head and the crankcase. (where the headgasket sits) you'll see this by taking the rocker cover off to see into the camshaft though.
But that'd mean the head would be full of oil.
You sure you weren't just pouring it fast to start with? It fills up if you pour too fast to start with as it doesn't have time to drain in.

If oil passages were blocked the cam would be starved of oil in places and be seizing up. Sooo..... I don't mean to offend but I think you were just pouring the oil too fast

Thanks. No offence taken. I'll see what's what when I can get at it again. My main concern was not to let them drive away with a dry sump.

The owner actually came to me to investigate a battery draining issue. I'll start a new thread on that (an aftermarket alarm may be involved).

Hopefully will be all good. Just check the passages when you have the lid off and the coil pack seal is only about £2 maximum I think. Don't even have to disconnect coil pack to change it

There is nothing on the end of the cam, its where the dizzy mounted on pre ECU cars. Its a sensible enough place to mount coil packs.

There is a flame trap inside the cam cover that can get blocked too.

What oil grade is your customer using and when was it last changed?

Cheers

D
